I got a destroyer right now as my main ride while I train up to a decent skills et for operating a cruiser.
I like it for what it is. I can provide a decent amount of medium range firepower and eliminate frigate class ships quickly.
Right now mainly use it as a rat killer (6 beams and 2 slavagers) at my corp's hq and do some anti-theft actions for the miners (warp scram in mid, and 1 nos replacing a slavager or 2 nos and no salvager). I can even fit it with a pair of miners and do decently as a miner/overwatch with a group or solo there (can kill the rats with the lasers and go back to mining again)
Have tried various fittings for use in a fleet type engagement, including pure tackler killer configs as well. Haven't really had a chance yet to do more than small engagments though... and by the time I do larger ones I'll be in the larger ships.
And once I get cruisers trained up and science I likely will keep my coercer as a slavage ship which is what i hear most are doing if anything with them.
So tell me why you like or dislike the destroyers
(and there is very little chance of me going back to frigates after flying a desi... maybe the tormentor for pure mining with a hauler back in high sec.)

Destroyers got a slight boost not that long ago - but you are using them in its correct role. For killing tacklers, you wont find a better ship for 1mil isk. Ive even seen close range guns on a destroyer work before, granted its other close range frigs you're against.
As for never flying frigs again - reconsider it. The punisher is a beast - try this setup on it and you might be converted back to frigs
3x 150mm Light Autocannon, 1x Small Nosferatu Warp Disrupter, Stasis webifier Small armor repairer, 400mm reinforced plate, 200m reinforced plates, Micro Auxialiary Power Core.
Its a cheap and fun ship to fly - experiement :)

I like them because everyone hates them.
In fact I like most ships that everyone hates. I fly them deliberately and out of spite, and I get immense pleasure from doing so.
Whats more, through doing this I've learned that 99% of peoples whining on the forums is a load of rubbish.
Destroyers are fine. The reason WHY people hate them is because they have sand in their ***** about the fact that it's not an active tank raven or a HAC or some other rediculous overpowered ISK sink like that.

Or even better, get a rifter (drop the 200mm plate and add a AB).
Destroyers though are great for frig and inty popping. A Thrasher w/ 7x 280mm, some gyros and sensor boosters can pop shuttles and pods before they warp if your fast. --------------- This sig has been censored in fear of recieving the ban hammer... |

The only real PVP experience I've had in a Destroyer was getting my first ganked by the Privateers (bless their black hearts), and anti-drone + tackle duty in a small gang PVP .. incident. I ganked about 1.5 - 2 flights of drones, and I've put another million SP in gunnery since then.
So ... Destroyers are good at anti-frig. And that's it. They're also *EXCELLENT* pirate-bait. =)

Cormorants are supposed to be quite good at range. Supposedly they reach 90km with t2 ammo.

Cormorant makes excellent long range anti frig/drone sniper
7x 150mm II (or as many as you can fit) 2x SB II, 2x TC II 1x PDS II rigs: might need ACR rig to fit 7 150mm's
Optimal w/ spike is around 73km

Destroyers are cool cheap ships, BUT they are soo fragile it hurts... With T2 modules they can really put the hurts on people, but with the price you can probably fit an Assault Frigate to do the job just as well while being much more survivable...
That is definately true for a Cormorant vs Harpy - before invention a T2 sniper fitting went like this: Cormorant 24m - Harpy 34m... With the Cormorant doing a bit less DPS and having NO TANK, while the Harpy had a great tank, super resists and more slots available...
Some races do have more different roles from their destroyers and AF's which makes the destroyers usefull in some roles - like those cheap trashers surprising T2 frigs around Eve... - I'm a nice guy!! and OMG I love Team Tuxford for the speedbalancing... |
