Is their any fantasy online games worth playing. I know D&D Online, WOW and Vanguard suck. What about Ever Quest II?
Thankyou Barry Steel

I enjoy Lord of the Rings Online atm It's a fun and casual RPG if you don't mind the lack of PvP.

I played EQ2 for about 6-7 months, before moving to AO, then to EvE...
EQ2, run by SONY (there's the magic word), don't expect the game to be supported, or the same the next time you log in, as the Sony developers must wake up in a morning, and toss a coin on whether to make a major game-changing rewrite every day.
When I first started playing, the game had a nice balance between solo-content and group-content. About 5 weeks before I finished playing, they decided on a major re-write to pretty much remove solo-content, so you had to join random groups to get anything done. Unfortunately, having experienced a few random groups previously, and died lots due to them, I had no wish to continue playing...
Apparently, they've rolled it back (about 3-4 months later), so that there's solo-content again, but for me, the damage was done.

Damn, I used to love EQ2. I always thought SOE did pretty well with it. But after reading your post I'm convinced otherwise. EQ2 was always the more adult alternative to WoW in my eyes. Is it dead now?

DAoC was always good. Decent PvE, Healthy PvP (Realm Vs Realm), but I think it may be dwindling a bit now.

A few of the people I knew back then, who played it when I did, stuck around to see if Sony could actually fix the damage they did......early impressions seem to be good, so it may be worth having a look for yourself, to see what you think.
I will agree with you on EQ2 being the more "mature" alternative to WoW, having played both, and the perfect mix would be EQ2's slickness and nicer graphics, with Blizzard's approach to customer-service......EQ2 really felt like you were working towards something, compared to WoW's "OMG EPIX!!!!!" rush to L70.
Really liked EQ2's approach to crafting, aswell......compared to WoW's "collect the materials and press Go" boredom, EQ2's crafting system involved having to combat extra effects with special crafting-skills (heat bubbles in Blacksmithing, stuff like that), and it gave you a proper sense of achievement when you made something decent.

If you ask me, Lord of the Rings Online is the definitive fantasy MMO right now. It's got a recognizable world, even people who've never played a single game know a bit about it, whereas in wow and eq you're thrown in the deep with no idea what's going on.
LOTRO also has the best quests i've ever seen in an MMO. Your personal storyline quests even have loads of scripted events, and are far from the tedious monster grind you usually get from quests (think Half-Life when i say scripted events, not the ridiculously simplistic stuff in WoW).
It's also one of the few MMO's where you can actually have a nice farsight, instead of the fogginess that surrounds all other MMO's, it's just nice to just walk around in there.
Just try LOTRO, you won't be dissapointed :)

There is an MMO in closed beta right now that is a Fantasy RPG based on ancient Rome. Think WoW, but with Gladiators. I guess its like a cross between WoW and God of War or something. Its called Gods and Heroes: Rome Risisng.
The only fantasy MMO I've played is WoW, which I enjoyed while I was playing it. I don't dig fantasy that much. I was always more of a Star Wars nerd than a D&D nerd.

Yeah I spent probably 3 years in daoc (just before the SI expansion). Massive changes since that time but to truly play this game you'll need atleast 2 accounts. One to play and one for the buff bot. Lately though the pvp sense of it has been getting pretty bad. Theres atleast 5 classes that I can think of off the top of my head that can heal over time now during combat. 2 of those classes have a regenerating bubble meaning you automatically miss a shot every 15 seconds. 2 of these classes have a fumble debuff so you miss more. Shield changes were made so you can block more but they didn't take into account the size of the shield so you can block just as well with a trash can lid as you can with a heater shield. Just recently they changed the archery class so now a full group of half wit archerers can kill you and be gone before you even have a clue as to what happened. They nerfed dual wielders at the same time as the shield boost so most assassin classes hit like little girls now which I must say was one of my favorite classes. They did fix the water exploit atleast so people can't water bob and kill you with a pet. Casters have the ability to cast through being hit and with them life tapping you every 1.6 seconds your dead in less than ten seconds with them running off to hide for 10 minutes for that ability to come up again. Plus the population has been getting increasingly low so leveling will most likely mean your going to be solo until higher levels.
I am trying LOTRO right now which I really like although I haven't been in game for like 3 weeks since I went on a EvE playing spree.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, so I'll put forth Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2. They don't have a monthly fee for playing online, and the community is really strong.
They have hundreds of Persistent Worlds hosted by fellow players each with vastly different settings and rules, plus size and complexity.
And if you know anything about D&D 3rd Edition you'll fit right in.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

Neverwinter Nights was a shockingly good "MMO" (persistent world multiplayer, anyhow) in it's day. Most such servers were free to access, too; none of this subscription malarky.
Some of the most entertaining PvP of any fantasy game so far --------

co-incidentally i reinstalled NWN yesterday night, and was bored before i even left the castle at the beginning. tonight i'm going to see if, on reflection, BG2 was actually a big pile of spunk.

From what I remember (been a while) the tutorial and first bunch of quests are pretty excruciatingly dull. If you have it, try skipping straight to one of the expansion pack campaigns. They heated up a lot faster. --------

They don't feature a world big enough to warrant the first M in MMO, IMHO. The monthly fee you pay for MMO's like EVE and WoW is to keep the massive server infrastructure running as much as possible, to offer more than the 100, maybe 200 people you can cram into an NWN server. Not to mention that NWN is geared towards very small group play as opposed to the more varied content you get from 'real' MMO's (raids, fleet battles, while also serving the lower playercounts).

True, but if you just want to play or compete with others online NWN can fulfill your needs very well. And as we know from Eve, bigger isn't always better.
