I accidentally bought a faction smartbomb from the LP store [seriously CCP, sort out a confirm button!] but anyway, I trained it up and put it onto my domi and I've started walking through lvl 4's. You never have to worry about scrambling frigs ever again, just aggro, let them swarm and click smartbomb and then get on with the mission.
If you've not tried it yet, I'd suggest you do.

A few missions have frigates as triggers for next wave, so unless you can tank for instance the entire first and second wave of Damsel in Distress you might wanna reconsider.

Edited by: kill0rbunny on 03/07/2007 09:56:26 Edited by: kill0rbunny on 03/07/2007 09:55:23 Try doing a guristas mission where some frigs use 20km scrams.
Try doing worlds collide where the whole stage aggroes if you pop a smartbomb at the angel spies.
I do not think you did many missions so far.
BTW there's actually a forum for missionrunning stuff.
I pew therefore I am.

I actually do this for drone missions. But as previously pointed out. In many missions the frigs are triggers for the next wave. So be very careful.

I can tank all levels of worlds colide and all except the bonus lvl of extravaganzas (havent tried that lvl) in a drake. That's with a balance resistance to all 4 damage types also. That way I don't have to worry about needing a different hardener.
A well tanked BS should have little problem tanking these, expecially if it has a rat specific tank. I normally just go with my standard PVP setups on a BS.
For the drake, it did take a few tries. I hadn't run many missions before hand when everytime I tried to do a WC of GE lvl4, the entire room would agro me. I had to drop all the passive hardeners and use actives. Also had to use an alt in a myrmidon to run a remote shield transfer.
BS's have much better tanks though, the only problem is that you need to be sure to give the BS enough cap recharge so that it can actually keep the tank running.
I'm simply stating that it is fairly easy to actually tank the rooms and not just the groups. There are requirements though, exeptional skills and many much needed lvl 5 ones. -------------------------------------- ---"What's in your wallet?"--- "There are two kinds of respect, fear and admiration.... Sure you can set up some of the battleships to tank everything for forever and a day. Personally I'd like to use a lesser tank and fit some damage mod so it doesn't take forever and a day to finish said mission...

ive somewhat got an Insane tank on my Drake, & it hits quite well with No Ballistic Controls on LvL 4's.
may take me a little longer, but i get thro it with the aid of my drones, plus im in no rush.
HOWEVER, saying that, the ONLY mission i HAD to get help on ( & btw, it was far too hard, numerous warp outs :( ) was Enimies Abound 5/5.
After popping 1 ship per entry, i often came out in structure

Aye, its fun to tank around 8-10 BS in my domi. However, its not fun to have crappy DPS to take said BSs down. Though, from seeing Mathias post I don't think he has any problems with his DPS. I just wish my Domi had more grid to fit bigger guns. Will come in time. http://www.infowars.com/print/Secret_societies/bush_Sab_photo.htm |

The great thing about smartbombs is their damage applies to all ships in radius, effectively multiplying your DPS. The radius is calculated from your hull not the centre of your ship, so the larger the ship the better.
Plus, having lots of stuff blow up around you at once is cool.

Smartbombs are also great for finding the structure with the loot drop - why guess and waste ammo shooting at different structures when you can just crash into them and let the smartbombs rip? It is intensely satisfying exploderising multiple structures at once. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

to the topic of this thread...
Get a Drake, fit well mission specific. no bombs, no fuss, no worries.
all lvl 4's are doable, only some bosses require extra damage to go down, i.e. Vengeance for example.. the trick is to chase it until it starts AB-ing back to center of complex, then his tank is almost off, kill with ease..
kill cruisers first or a single or two scrambling frigs, deal with the rest as you please...

I keep on hearing that ships popped with officer smarties have a better chance of dropping faction loot. Sounds good to me! * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I hadn't heard that, but I've seen what officer smart bombs do in terms of clearing the room. You need far less tank when you can pop most of the ships in seconds.
What p*sses me off is seeing what I thought was my secret revealed on the EO forums. Now everyone's going to be doing it.

im curious. what do you have to do for smarties to really become effective because in most of the missions ive seen the ships orbit our of smartbomb range and would require me to approach them all individually which seems silly and ineffective.
i can see some missions benefiting from them hugely - the second pocket of silence the informant comes to mind but apart from a couple of missions are these really useful?
also what minimum range do they need to be useful and which missions are they useful on?

Tbh I use them on all missions. Just approach and blast away! I started of with the medium ones with like 4km range, but moved up to 7,5km faction ones now. My maelstrom has 8x of them on, and is just wiping the floor on ANY mission!

Let me tell you a sad story of a guy i knew. He was using a smartbomb on his faction fitted caldari navy raven, it was an expensive one, that had a range of somewhere around 10km. He told this frankly to anyone and even discussed it on local, so everyone knew he was using a smartbomb on his raven. Then, one day, an evil pirate came along. He heard of that guy, that was using the smartbomb and set up an evil plan. This pirate was a master in mission-probing and once he saw the guy with the smartbomb on his raven dock off, he started to probe the system. It is not known how often he tried this, but finally he found him, doing a mission. The pirate warped to him with a cloaked covert ops frigate and approched him, keeping a littl distance, to avoid being decloaked. And after a while, the guy with the smartbomb on his raven activated the smartbomb. Seconds later concord ships appeared and killed the guys expensive raven. The pirate quickly approached the wreck, grabbed the few expensive fitting items, that survived, and warped away. The guy with the raven did not use smarbombs anymore.

I'm currently doing lvl 2's mind you. Still a newcomer but I'm doing in .8 - .9, what's the possibly that I could start using some of those room-clearing smarties w/o being wtfpwned by Concord?
I got tons of frigates flying at me and I can tank 'em fine, just takes a little time for my Med II's to finish them off is all. Perhaps smarties around roids/other mission structures are not recommended??

I've found that running my main toon and an alt, both reasonably skilled in the use of Drakes, works great for L4s. It doesn't matter who gets agro because either one can tank pretty much any L4 and HML work great on everything from frigates up (faction ones are a little tough but they fall fast under fire from two Drakes). I focus fire on the battleship rats and they drop fast, too. I focus on some faction rats to drop them faster, as well. If you really want to be spiffy, you can put a shield transfer or something on each just in case you need more tank, but that's rarely a problem.
