I've been looking for good Shoot-em-ups lately, particularly the vertical scrollers like '1942', but horizontal scrollers like Gradius are good, too.
A friend of mine had Einhander for the PlayStation, but lost it. I liked it, but it's hard to find in used game stores and the eBay prices are a bit higher than I'm willing to pay.
I played Tyrian a while back, but it's an old game and it's hard to get it working on a modern version of Windows. Its weapons also get overpowered by mid-to-late game (but that's what makes it fun).
I'm thinking of picking up one of the R-Type games for the PlayStation if I can find one at a local store.
Post away on good Shumps. I'm looking for Windows, Mac, Linux, or PlayStation games.

I really used to enjoy "UN Squadron" on my SNES. Not sure if it made it to other platforms.
When I get home I'll have a flick through my SNES/PS/Saturn/3DO games and see if anything rings a bell from back in the day.

Try World of Padman It's available for both Linux/Mac/Windows, also it's Open Source and free.
I wrote a list of FPS game here which in most part are cross-platform, many of them Open Source or free.

I've just downloaded the demo. Perfection has been reached in the horizontal scroller shump genre, no further entries are necessary

Crap! I was going to suggest Ikaruga. Still, Jets 'n' Guns is still pure class, I should shell out for it myself someday.

Vertical: Xevious.
Horizontal: Scramble.
There's definitely a PC version of Xevious (used to have it, bundled in with one of those $5 "100 Classic Games" discs). Not sure about Scramble. |

Get the full thing, its worth every cent.
Play it on hardest mode, its a few hours (at least) of pure fun, and you'll want to play it again anyways, because its so damn awesome.
The weapons get better and better

If you get DOSbox, and twiddle with that a little, it'll almost work 100% on XP. Good game, I loved it and still love it.
But the new top-down shooter these days is Ikaruga. It's a must buy if you have a Gamecube or Dreamcast.

Bells n' Whistles (Arcade) was fantastic...and Xenon II on the Amiga. You can't go wrong with R-Type II either.
Oh and for platform style shoot em' ups...Turrican II baby! -------------

Yes! This game has style! I've played the shareware version to death. Too bad the full version costs $16

Went back through my old games and found no decent scrollers apart from UN Squadron.
I did however rediscover Mr. Do! for the SNES, which I fired up again for a bit of nostalgia. One of the true greats of the early days IMO.
