Ive been using EVEmon for a while to manage my character, very good program.
Today it told me there was an update available so i got it and when i tried to run EVEmon after the update it tells me that i need an API key and to get it i have to click a link. The link takes me to
http://myeve.eve-online.com/api/default.asp
I know not to click links from programs and all that so does this look suspicious to anyone? EVEmon already has my passwords to my accounts but the website wants my to login using my EVE login.
Just wanted to check before i did it.

from what ive heard, the api key thing is supposed to be more secure for evemon to access your chr than the login name/pw ~~~~~~

Edited by: Keira Fordring on 04/07/2007 03:11:59 The link forwards you through a secure page to a place to get a limited access key. Here's a quote from the page:
Quote:
Limited Access API Key Allows access to character sheet and skill training information only. Use this for applications such as skill change notifiers.
What is an API key? What do I use it for?
The API key is a private code that identifies your account. Combined with your user ID, this key allows third party programs and web sites to access information about your characters and corporations. Using this data, such utilities can improve your EVE experience by providing useful functionality such as wallet exports, skill training notifications, and other tools.
Is this safe? Can someone steal my account?
You can safely provide the above information in yellow to applications and web sites that wish to access your character and corporation details. This is the only safe way to give programs and web sites access to your data. Do not give out your account username or password to any person, program, or web site. Please keep in mind that doing so is a violation of the EULA and can lead to account termination.
Sharing your password gives people access to your account. Sharing your API key does not. It allows the recipient to view your character and corporation data only and gives them absolutely no control over it. They are not able to log in to the game or post on the forums with this information. The API key is in no way generated from your account password - there is no way to calculate your password using this information.

Edited by: Gojyu on 04/07/2007 03:15:56 It's perfectly safe. One of the biggest problems new players have with evemon is "Wow, do I really need to give these guys my username and password?". Granting that kind of thing to a 3rd party program is something most mmog players are extremely hesitant to do. This removes that problem, as evemon no longer collects a user's account details, instead giving the program a kind of "read-only" access to your account. It can look, but if anyone got a hold of your api they couldn't do squat with it

It doesn't forward everybody. I use mozilla firefox, maybe that's why... I don't know. It got me confused for some time, when I clicked on the link the whole evemon blew up. I had to enter the link manually and then.. ahhhh ... the light.
Still, is not displaying the skills correctly on some of my accounts. But I'm to lazy right now to figure it out.
