I'm confused out of my skull. How the balls do scanners work?
The tutorial asks me to buy and equip scan probe launcher. They take 220 cpu minimum apparently. What? My rifter has only 143 cpu... the default ship scanner is i guess supposed to be used to to entertain the mentally handicapped. i dono.
what balls is up with scanner.s

The default scanner will help you to find what is in the area and help you to find easy exploration sites.
The scan probe launcher does take up alot of CPU. I sugegst going with a covert ops ships if you want to add a probe launcher as they have time bonuses and CPU bonuses.
With scan probes, you can scan ships, cosmic signatures, drones, structures and something else I forgot. I use them only for ship scanning and exploration really though. Although, when looking for a new home, the structure scanning is important for being able to place a POS somewhere.

The default ship scanner can only scan for cosmic signatures.
Cosmic signatures are just small little encounters you can find in space.
If you want to scan for other types of signatures, you'll need to fit a proper scan probe launcher and the appropriate probe (gravimetric, magnetometric, ladar, radar) and train the skills up.
I'm not so sure on the tutorial problem as I haven't encountered it. Try buying a probe to do the scanning part, then fly back with your rifter to do the shooting?

Scan probing is fairly involved... Here is the guide for it.

Yeah, that doesn't quite sound right, considering the skill prereqs for probing, but I guess it's possible.
To the OP, make sure you're not confusing using the onboard scanner and the scan probes. All ships have an onboard scanner and is the pirates (and non-pirates in fact) best friend. Scan probes on the other hand require several specific skills be trained to be effective as well as some rather expensive equipment (a launcher and several 30k+ ISK probes that last 10 minutes at most). I'm training up to effectively use the scan probes myself now, but Astrometrics being a rank 3 and needing level 5 to use the long range probes is a PITA.

This has been easily the simplest AND most helpful post all week. Directional scanner... i wish there was a tutorial on THAT. Not probe scanning...

We can't help you if you say you want to use scan probes and actually mean the directional scanner instead.
Anyway, directional scanner is fairly easy.
Set range in km (1 AU = 149.6 million km). Set a degree of scan. Point the camera in the direction you want to scan in, press scan.
For a step by step guide, try GoonFleet Scanning 101.

Common courtesy for everybody who actually tried to help but couldn't due to mis-communication, rather than a sarcastic post would be nice.
That link will answer all questions about the directional scanner you'll need to know.

I'm new to scanning also, and just tried out using the onboard scanner to scan for cosmic signatures in Todaki... When I found one (said "deadspace signal") and I warped to it, all I saw was what looked like some sort of small cloud about 15 k from where the scan said something would be... The scan accuracy was 0m, but I could not see anything, even when I went into the cloud. On my system map it said I was on top of "guristas hideout" but I could not right click on it or anything... What do I do to find the hideout?
