As we all know they require a lot of tags. The problem is not only the number of tags required for some of the offers, but also that in many cases the tags required do not drop in enough quantites. Some of the lower tier tags drop less than the higher tier tags.
Take Amarr tags as an example. Amarr Major tags in large quantities are required for some of more attractive offers, for example 437 tags are needed for a Republic Fleet Warp disruptor. Problem is that Amarr Major tags drop less than other tags.
I have been tracking how many tags you get from different missions and in the 7 missions (I have not checked Portal of War 3 which I will do soon) I have followed only Missing Reports 3, lvl 3 has dropped Major tags (and that was only 3) and Intercept the Saboteurs lvl (1 tag). Compare that to for example Colonel tags (7 in War Situation 2, 6 in Surprise, Surprise lvl 4) or even General tags (7+9 tags in In the Midst of the Deadspace 1 lvl 4) which drop more often than Major tags. The higher tier tags drop more and less are required for offers.
Looking at market is also evidence of this problem. Major tags sell for 500% over NPC prices compared to Colonel/general which don't have any buy orders above NPC proces. Also in Heimatar there are about 300-400 Major tags (before Rev II since I assume now many will keep their tags, now the number of sold Major tags are about 200-300) traded each day on average. That is less than it is required to buy ONE Warp Disruptor.
The ISK value of tags are probably correctly set (assuming they are bought at NPC prices) but it does not take into account how frequent they are as loot.

of course, let us know your rates when you do level 5 missions, which are all VS the opposing sides Navy. I'd expect your gather rate to be drastically increased.

Well it depends of which ships there are in lvl 5 missions. Major tags come from cruisers. I have so far only got Major tags from two Amarr ships, Omen and Imperial Templar Muzakir.
In lvl 4 (and probably lvl 5 even more) you usually get more of BCs and up (and tacklers bit they drop lowe tier tags liek Sergeant and Midshipman).

Yes that is what I have been trying to do, but there are not that many navy missions and they don't drop many tags:
Intercept the Saboteurs: - 1 Major tag Missing reporters part 3 - 3 Major tags Secret Project X part 3 (have never got this one myself. Looking at which ships are in that mission) - 4 Major tags ?
Out of these missions the two "good" are the third part in a multi-part mission. Count how many missions you need to run to collect 437 major tags

I'm coming to the conclusion that most LP shop offers are like faction frigates -- for bragging rights, not cost effective for day-to-day use.
If you want faction stuff on your ship be prepared to pay collector prices for it. Otherwise just buy the equivalent rat droppings instead.

Faction ships are practically given away compared to the modules that require tags. The faction ships only require LP, cash and two easy-to-get items. -- Guile can always trump hardware -- |

You are right, the faction ships are practically a steal. I can sell 600k LP to NPC in the form of nexus chips and buy a CNR off the market without ever having to mess with finding a raven to upgrade.

Unfortunately only the science corps do have the nexus chip offers. And those mostly don't have good combat agents.

Edited by: Lord WarATron on 07/07/2007 09:32:47 I beleive offers are pre-nerfed in purpose and balanced later baised on statistical data on how much people buy. Remember chaps - this is pretty much how CCP always appear to work when adding new stuff in - Pre-nerf the hell out of it and fix it later with a boost, so you are always coming in with a positive fix insted of a negitive nerf. Like salvaging for example - when it came out - it was even worse than the tag requirements currently. Back then even a titan wreck dropped something like 1 tripped circuit or something. --
