hi, I'm supercanard, and I've been playing eve for about 2 years (with a 1 year brake) , I'm highly addicted, and I haven't opened eve in about 9 hours - thank you.
Seriously though, I was browsing for games in my local store about 2 years ago, after playing freelancer - and I saw the eve box (which I STILL own muuaaahahahaaaa) - I just though: "mmmm a game with a red box - this gotta be hot - so I bought it.. installed it - went to sleep while it patched - and 2 hours later woke up - and started shooting at concord - OMFG Hax0r - that concord guy just killed me in like 2 seconds! and he like had so many friends in his faction - how do I join them? (walk of shame) - awww the good memories...
Oh wait.. you just asked.. how we found it - erm yeah.. on a shelve in a gaming store. :D -------------------------------------------------- No trees were killed in the sending of this message. I was a FPS guy before EvE.
I took my PC into a new computer shop that opened a few doors down the road from me.
When I picked up my PC the guy who's shop it is says
"Ive installed a game called EVE on your system, used it as a bench mark, try it out if you want, Ive left you a trail CD key"
Well 3 years later he's my CEO, best drinking buddy and still the evil bastard that got me in to this time theft of a game :) _______________________________________________ *snip* Signature removed for exceeding the maximum file size of 24,000bytes -TheDagda ([email protected]) |

MMORPG wise...
Tradewars 2002 - 7 years Everquest 1 - 2+ years (yes, isn't space, but still) SWG - Original Beta, almost 2 years EVE
Heard about EVE via a Tradewars2002 forum, old friend and very respected known player (both in EVE and TW2002) was telling us about this place... turns out most old Tradewars 2002 people are here.
I was VERY MUCH into SWG at the time I heard of EVE. I logged on EVE, tried it, knew after about 4 days that all of us playing SWG were getting screwed, didnt log on SWG again until about 6 weeks later and gave away all my stuff to friends and never logged in again.

The only space game I really played before this was Colony Wars. I loved those games.
I found out about EVE in another forum. I was talking about Battlestar Galactica and posted a picture of a Cylon raider. Some dude said it looked like an Amarr frigate and posted the Executioner. I downloaded the game like a week later.

I grew up surrounded by my father's sci-fi collection, so that has always been a penchant of mine. In terms of game progression:
M.U.L.E. -> Elite -> Subtrade: Return to Irata -> Elite II -> Elite: Frontiers -> Privateer I & II -> X Series -> Freelancer -> EVE
Of course that sequence is peppered with other oldies but goldies such as Starglider, Xenon 2, the Wing Commander series, Beneath a Steel Sky, B.A.T. and loads of other sci-fi related adventure/shooter/rpg stuff, but you wanted a sequence of space trader games.
EVE has the same feel as Elite in terms of vastness, but much more freedom and of course much more cunning opponents. The trading and production element attracted me from moment I laid eyes on it, although I got sucked into mission running and some corporation level warfare when I started. Nowadays though you are more likely to find me mining ice and setting up production jobs.

I was, and still am mostly into FPS.
Unreal Quake 3 Half-Life (That also means Conter-Strike, The Specialists, Natural Selection, Vampire Slayer, Team Fortress Classic and countless other mp/sp mods) Halo Unreal 2004 Half-Life 2 (As well as CSS and Dystopia on clan-level)
As you see, all this were mostly sci-fi action games, with my favorite parts of them being large multiplayer battles. Then my clan leader in Dys got hooked on EVE and got inactive for a long time. The clan was about to disband, so i went inactive to play some NS again, where lots of the community members advertised EVE in game and on forums. I decided to check it out, with it being my first and last MMO.
And heh, here i am year and a half later, a bit crippled by the attribute selection i did in the very beginning, but never regretting that i tried this game. -

Edited by: Ryysa on 07/07/2007 10:21:37 Hmph, my path is a long one...
From only space games: Privateer X-Wing vs Tie Fighter StarCraft ( :P ) Homeworld, Homeworld 2 I-War 2 Freelancer
And more in general... I think first FPS I played was wolfenstein 3d back when i was 6 years old or so... I've probably played most popular FPS's at one time or another. I played the first Unreal Tournament online, on a high level. Currently I have CS:Source...
From MMO's, I've played: Lineage II WoW (just 2 weeks) Silkroad (1 week) RF Online (1 week) Guild Wars (though not really an MMO, but has good pvp)
The interesting thing is, that since I started work, and generally since about around march this year, I've increasingly lost interest in computer games. I just don't want to play anything anymore, and I'm not sure that I'll ever come back to EvE from my current hiatus either. I guess I got hit by the real life nerfbat
P.S. Regarding about how I got to eve, well someone I got to know during my Lineage II time (hi Drasked) told me to try out EvE. I ended up liking it, and we've played quite a bit together. In fact, I'm going to pay him a visit in Amsterdam in about 2 weeks.

I won't recount all the games I've called home in the past 20 years, but the general flow goes something like this:
Attended college before the huge internet boom, back when the internet was still text-based (i.e. no www, and I remember distincly looking at Mosaic 1.0 and thinking 'that crap will never catch on' ... hah).
Played text-based RPGs (MUSHes and MUDs from school). Misc single and limited mult-player games (Doom series, Quake series, Diablo1&2). Played EnB from 1mo after launch until EVE beta7 EVE b7 -> EVE release -> rev2, woot Mix some WoW in there for some diversity and there you have it.
Currently looking fwd to seeing how Tabula Rasa comes out. Not something that could replace EVE and prolly won't compete favorably with WoW, but I sitll like a good shoot'emup game.
