I'm really new to the game(about a week in) and have been enjoying myself with the little bit I've been able to do. So far I cleared the tutorial and done a few missions here and there, killing pirates in the belts(is this ratting?), and helped a friend haul his ore. My few attempts to PvP and scout low sec to try piracy didn't end too well, both times ended with me in an egg flying back home. The first guy to pop me was really helpful and talked to me for a bit about various things. I'm enjoying the skill based system and the ship customizing but I'm hung up on money.
I'm wondering what is the best way to get a decent income going on a low SP combat oriented character. So far from my forum trolling people seem to say ratting and missions but what are the best places to do it and what should I be looking for and building towards with my character? Also I see some people mention salvaging and is that something I should pickup to add income to my ratting/missions? I guess one of my bigger questions is what sec space should I be ratting/doing missions in? It seems people say the bigger money is in lower sec space but I'm not really looking for big money right now, just enough to get me by so I can play with the different parts of the game.
Thanks for any help or info.

I'm pretty new myself, only a little over a month in. I found ratting around asteroids in 0.7 space to be pretty doable in a frig. The bounties on the NPC pirates are a bit larger and the money adds up.
Personally, although I'm primarily trained for combat, I've begun to spend more time training industrial skills and mining. I should be trained up for salvaging pretty soon as well. There is still so much I have to learn about this game, I think I'm going to take it slower and not jump right into low SP PvP. For me at least it got too expensive too quick.
Good luck! |

Salvaging is a must. You can earn more from salvage than from bounties and loot combined.
For ISK, also, you can do missions, you can enter deadzone complexes and just kill everything (these are called DED, and you can find them by using your Star Map to show them), and you can kill pirates in asteroid belts.
You can also buy/sell, even on a small scale. For example, buying ammo and missiles really cheap (with a standing buy order) then selling it later at a normal price.
Joining a corp can help in many ways, too, so make sure you consider that.
