OK, I nabbed this from PC Gamer (UK) which just came out today. But I thought I'd share it for those who might want to try it. Basically it's a re-engineered version of Frontier that works straight up in Windows so you don't have to fiddle with DOS and obscure settings.
If you're interested all you need are the Windows Binaries and the Sound Effects and Music. The readme in the Windows Binaries will tell you what to do with the Sound Effects and Music once you've unzipped it. Enjoy.

Eh?
Link should be correct now. I'm not sure how it went wrong in the first place. I tested it after I wrote the OP and it seemed fine. Someone must be playing funny buggers on me.

It's the sequel to Frontier. I found it for a fiver by pure luck on my hols 2 year ago but there's still no support in it from DOSBox. And I've never been able to find Frontier anywhere.
(So here's hoping someone's crazy enough to make something like what you linked to for First Encounters)

I doubt that will happen to be honest. Elite and Frontier: Elite 2 are the ones people remember most fondly. First Encounters was pretty crap compared to these two.

Which is exactly why I'm not chuffed at my lack of a copy of Frontier.

Those were the days - sitting around for half an hour while Elite loaded up from a cassette tape onto my Commodore 64, only for it to crash right at the end of the load; back to the start and another half hour wait. The joy of those first few trips around Lave, Diso and Riedquat. And the look of vague concern on my mum's face as I tried to explain why it was ok for me to be trading narcotics and firearms. I still remember the first time I took down a Thargoid invasion ship too. Pure, unadulterated joy Best game ever.

First encounters was a bug ridden travesty.
Just downloaded the frontiers stuff, ill give it a whirl later, its what eve owes a buge debt to, elite and its siblings are what get my groove going. The original and ultimate do what you want in a space setting.
Roll on elite 4, my prayers go forth with you...

Frontier..... man... I play the Amiga version from time to time in WinUAE, and it still rocks (unlike some other retro games that get boring within five minutes). It was my love of Frontier that brought me to Eve... The Cobra3 is a fiiiine ship (even made a sig about it) and so is the Imperial Courier, especially on the Amiga version where it doesn't need a crew. Probably my favourite of them all. Sure, you can use the money-making cheat and get yourself a Panther and tank it like a titan, but being slow like a titan kinda sucks. Smaller ships win.
Whenever I play I invariably end up in a moral dilemma, so I ask you people: is it ok to use the 650ly "wormhole" jumps? Feels kind of tacky to use a bug to go anywhere you want with just two jumps and a days time, but I know many serious gamers use(d) it anyway...

I just installed it and I have an embarrassing question which I can't find in the manual - how do I move? :<
I pressed a button and took off and someone yelled at me for not having clearance and then told me to vacate the area but I didn't know how to move so he blew me up.

Just on that note: PC drives that can read Amiga-formatted floppies off-the-shelf (ergo without some hackery on the part of the player) are somewhat "hen's teeth" in my area at least - most likely non-exisitant altogether - but with a real Amiga or a hacked-up PC drive, the disks could be ripped to ADFs to play on WinUAE. But not GLFrontier. Dunno if a CD version was released for the Miggy though, but I doubt it. Even if there was, would GLFrontier like it? Again, I doubt it.

What you're asking for is kinda against the rules, but I can point you to something legitimate.
www.eliteclub.co.uk
Those guys have shareware versions, even on ADF, only changes made, I beleive, were just the replacement of the Konami and GameTek logos in favour of "Frontier Dev."
Don't worry, it's legit, I found that site via Frontier Development's (which is founded and run by David Braben) site.

You can use the WinUAE emulator if you want to use the ADFs, but you'll need a Kickstart ROM. I personally don't condone googling one since it's illegal to use a Kickstart ROM, you don't legally own, which is why I just bought Amiga Forever.
If you want to run the DOS version though, just use DOSBox or GLFrontier.

The easiest way would be with a real Amiga, and the next best option requires fiddling with your PC Floppy drive.
