Edited by: Cleveland Steam on 08/07/2007 01:30:05 WoW - 2+ years. The beta was a blast and I had a lot of fun doing the hardcore raiding for about a year. I was at the forefront in the content, so the competition was fun but drama between guilds ruined it. Not to mention the content became rinse/repeat. The downfall of that game will be due to the dev's compliance with whiners. If enough people complain about something, they WILL change it...even if it doesnt make sense.
UO - Not long...I didnt really get it. I was young and opted for skating instead.
Planetside - 2 months. **** sandwich.
Eve - Off and on for almost 2 years now. Sometimes the game becomes overwhelming and I cannot login.
Habbo Hotel - The graphics are meh but the pvp is hot.
I played BF42 CAL/competition for a while...now that was a ******* game. Too bad EA wiped its ass on the rest of the BFx franchise imo.
I dont have a favorite. Currently I play Eve because of the risk factor and it is less time intensive. You dont have to grind for hours if you dont want to. 24/7 skill training is dope.

DAoC wasn't my first online experience but so far was the best. Best system for PvP yet. Just getting into Eve so I cannot comment yet. Wow is too wash, rinse, repeat.

EVE - almost a year now I think
Guild Wars - off and on, about a year total
A few random MMO's trials. Can't remember the names, they all sucked.
EVE is by far my favorite. -------------

Edited by: Plutoinum on 08/07/2007 02:14:28 I have switched a lot.
If I get bored, I play something else for a while. The games I've been playing a bit more 'serious' are:
- Neocron (over 2 years minus breaks) - EVE ( In total about 3 years due to breaks) - Planetside ( a few months in parallel to other games) - WoW (5 or 6 months)
The game that I checked out for some time (trial, beta or short subscription) are:
- Anarchy Online (subscribed, but then my Neocron Clan got active again ) - Lineage 2 (beta) - Starwars Galaxies (trial) - Auto Assault (trial) - Bounty Bay Online (beta) - Cabal, 2Moons, Silkroad (typical asian style mmorpgs, not really my thing) - City of Villains
EVE is surely the most complete and sophisticated game in that list. So would deserve the top place.
But if I look back and just rate the pvp fun that I had, the Neocron-1 gets my top vote. The reason is simply that I was in one of the top pvp clans and that we were a tight-knit group of friends. And that pvp was really fun in that game: Roleplay PvP game meets First-Person-Shooter with not many pvp restrictions. It was factions vs. factions, clans vs. clans, raids, fights for outposts. It was a lovely pvp/politics chaos. There was always trouble in the air. Like you went somewhere, some people started arguing and suddenly someone fired the first shot and it ended in a blood bath.
Once we had a server-wide pvp tournament, fighting outside was not allowed. In a break I got attacked by 2 enemies from behind, so we took revenge. Then the GMs arrived and stopped us and demanded that we keep peace, until the whole tournament is over on the next day, otherwise we get expelled. The whole peace lasted until the last important match was over and there were only fun matches left. In such a match someone interferred from outside to help his mate in the arena, so we shot the one, who interferred. Then it escalated into a fight were people just ran or died. Lots of whineage after that ofc.
Another time a 'friendly' faction stated on the forums that they have beaten/defeated us and that we are no more, although we never fought them. So we decided to visit their faction headquarter with a few people to hunt them down. Well, turned out that they got the backup of their faction mates. They told us to leave the place, outwise we get shot ! So I took my rare rocket launcher named 'Moonstriker', kneeled down, aimed and just fired into their rows. Big fight emerged, people fleeing in their appartments. In the end we got invited to a meeting with their faction councellor (some official) to discuss the whole thing and find a solution.
Things like that happened quite often in addition to the usual outpost fights, raids and this in an pvp environment, were few had a good chance vs. many and were dying also meant losing stuff. Was just great fun, but somehow the devs, didn't manage to preserve that fun.
EVE is there slower, against a blob you are usually dead, no matter, how you fly your ship, also because EVE is in open 3d space. In NC line of sight and the environment in general mattered. You needed to have the enemy within the crosshair, depending on the weapon/mods/skills more or less long to obtain high accuracy. Still easy compared to a shooter, but a shooter doesn't offer a persistent world with faction and clan politics, different classes, supporter roles and leveling for XP, hunting mobs for equipment and crafting.
So yes, in short I miss a bit pwn'ing with a tight-nit group of people and spontanious pvp. Like just hanging around, a bit duelling and from one second to another some hostiles attack and you have a cool fight. Or you are out to hunt some npcs in a group and suddenly you meet enemies and then you fight. There was no npc/pvp setup, no logging, you were always in pvp mode.
Well, EVE has other qualities.

I like EVE because it doesn't punish you for not playing long periods of time and all the other reasons people list. I really loved wow when it first came out and no one had ever played it before. It was very exciting but it eventually got old. In their defense that level of excitement, discovery, and anticipation is hard to create and sustain for very long. I liked SWG because of the crafting, resource gathering and exploring.
I think EVE is my favorite since its entertained me the longest. I like all the elements of PvE in EVE. I don't like PvP... I know that's sacrilege for the 1337 heads here. You have to be pretty hardcore to get the levels of twisted and perverted enjoyment out of tormenting PvPers with salacious carebeariness like I do.

I gotta say that ps is my favorite mmo ever, there was just so much you could do, i used to love airdropping over an hostile base cloaked and assassinating people, too bad there are not enough people still playing it, I really wish they would make a sequel or something like it

EQ 1- 2 years SWG: Pre-NGE- 2 1/2 years Ryzom- 6 months DnL- 2 months Eve- 7 months about WoW- 1 week Vanguard- 3 months
My ranking:
1- SWG: Pre-NGE 2- Eve 3- Ryzom 4- Vanguard 5- The rest are CRAP! (I probably need to try AO and a few other classics)
Eve is pretty close to SWG: Pre-NGE. Depending on how walking in stations goes, it might surpass SWG: Pre-NGE eventually... The unranked games are piles of crap, DnL being an abortion of Vaporware that was given physical form and EQ being a huge waste of time, a friggin theme park with no soul... WoW simply is an EQ clone.

I have to rate WoW as the top of the list easily. WoW isn't designed as a sandbox game, and it's not designed as a solo pvp game. Group pvp and fantasy-based rpg'ing is what wow sets out to do, and it executes it almost flawlessly. Eve, while a great game, feels limited in what it does. Sure you can fly around in space and pass planets, but you can't go down onto the planet, and you can't even get out of your capsule. Until you can, eve's always going to feel limited.

-Planetside: ~1 year, than they came with the BFR's :( -SWG: ~6 months untill it got ruined :( -WOW: ~4 months alltogether, inc. beta. It got boring quickly after release, tried it again later with a friend, but it was way too repetitive. -Guild Wars: ~3 months or so. Kinda fun, but I sucked at it, and constantly losing PVP is not much fun. :( -EVE: ~6 months and counting. Played it in '04, but didn't really get what was going on. Tried again a year later, but it was a bit too slow for me. Tried again in '06, signed up for 2 months, but didn't have enough time. Been playing now since march of this year.

UO 6 months EQ1 5 years SWG 2 years WoW 2 years CoH/CoV 3 months Auto Assault trial DAoC trial LOTRO trial Guildwars on and off EVE 4 months
There was nothing like that feeling of the very first time stepping into EQ1 and walking out to the dock in Freeport and it started raining over the ocean. I wanted SWG to be so much more than it ended up being. WoW was fun especially the battlegrounds. I tried out EVE back in 2004 and was a little overwhelmed back then. Came back a few months ago and with all the changes over the years it has become my favorite MMO. The potential for EVE is what has me excited.

1st LOTRO, played since its beta. 2nd EVE, played for 4 years.
Eve doesn;t make the grade anymore, LOTRO felt polished and finished at launch, they had their issues worked out, and are able to add content and an actual gameline storyline. Eve after 4 years still doesn't feel polished, due to lag you still can't have sound on in major battles, and still haven't truely managed to find the folder which contained all the details of the storyline. When someone at CCP finds that folder again and plugs in factional warfare then Eve might become a real game. Hopefully they'll employ someone to look for the folder soon. ----- 'The worst spot in hell is reserved for those who betray.'

Meridian 59 - hell to long ago to remember! UO - about 2 I think AC - 2-3 EnB - about 6 months sadly Eve - on and off since launch AC2 - 3 months (was sad really, they killed it) EQ2 - 2 yearsish WoW - 5 min VSOH - 6 months (I was optimistic)
I liked most of them about the same, if I was in for more than a year it was worth it to me and ranked high. Cant pick the best one really.
