Would the manticore be of any use for lowsec ratting? My thoughts are that with 3 cruise launchers, it should be able to take down npc cruisers etc, and with cloaking you safe from being caught (if your paying attention) by bigger player ships. My only worry is its kind of paper thin and may pop easily. Anyone ever tried this ship in this role, what should I use in my mids? I dont think the sensor damps approach would be ideal because Ewar doesnt work on npc's does it, but not sure what kind of a tank I could fit, if any...

use a hound instead. its the only SB that not compleatly gimped for pve. fit it for speed with AB. overdrives/istabs. get in close under the guns and fireaway. stay away from rats with missiles. Playing minmatar is "like going down a flight of stairs in a office chair firing an Uzi". |

Edited by: Illyria Ambri on 08/07/2007 14:23:34 Trying to rat with a Manti would be like trying to pick your nose with a toothpick.. definatly NOT the correct tool to use.
Stealth Bombers are single target hit and run ships.. not ment for ratting..
btw you do know that if you are being targeted or are targeted you cannot cloak... so unless you plan to attack from 80km+ and shoot about 3 volleys before warping out..
You are of course welcome to try.. but I assure you.. you'll end up crying ------------ This is not War... This is pest control - Dalek Sek

Thanks for the advice, so the short answer would be no :) A hound isnt an option, at this point in time Im not willing to commit the training time to any other races ships.

Edit// Yes im aware I cant cloak whilst being targetted. However, it does allow me to pass through gates etc safely, and means I dont warp into an asteroid belt on top of anybody with no way out. If im fighting NPC's, I have missiles. Means I can fly aligned to somewhere, as soon as anybody shows up on overview, I can warp off and then cloak up if necessary. This is all "in theory" of course, and in this game theory and reality are very different, which is why I posted.
Yes short answer.. any ship thats designed to use a cloak is not designed for ratting as primary DD.
Just get yourself into a Drake.. you can rat 0.0 or do lvl 3 missions with it. ------------ This is not War... This is pest control - Dalek Sek

Well, as a not very skilled manticore pilot, i can say that it is possible with some attention.I already tried this in a 0.0 belts and never used against a battleship yet but manticore defeated battlecrusiers in 3 salvo, crusiers in 2 and frigates in 1 salvo. And most of the times destroyers with only one missile. I think battleships should not be a problem with it.But the important point is how many targets you engaged with.If you warp in a belt with more than 3 strong npcs (for example 2 bc and 2 cruisers) you probably warp out in structure or worse.Problem is you probably fit only 2 dampeners because you need also a signal booster(s) on mid slot. Then you damp two targets simultaneously while engaging the other, if you have one more target in a belt you must keep yourself out of its guns range or you'll loose 50 million isk easily.Btw in low sec you probably don't encounter with that hard npcs and you rat easily.I think best tanking option is keeping range more than 100 km.

I can fly a drake and a raven and have been running level 4 missions but Im just getting bored of it. Yes, ratting 0.0 in a drake, your never going to struggle with the NPC's, its the gang of player ships that turn you into a wreck and then pop your pod that concerns me more.
Thanks starravenn, Im going to test it out, see how it goes. I'll let you know how I get on, expect to see me eating humble pie within the next day or two when I get popped

I understand the thoughts of the OP. I asked myself the same question recently since I liked the prospect of sneaking up on the rats and kill them up close without have to chase them down. Safe travel is another pro in 0.0 space. However, the ships are (at least for me) too expensive to risk losing in 0.0 space, which WILL happen for sure once in a while.

I already popped twice when testing .Btw try studying some EW related skills and use faction missiles, is really worth it.
