..because I've been searching these forums for a few hours now but I cannot seem to find the answers I'm looking for. So I thought I'd put it up here and hopefully some of you can answer it.
Let me first describe the scenario..
We have three parties, Corp A, Corp B and Corp C (this is all in empire BTW)
Corp A and B are at war with eachother, this is important for the rest of the scenario.
Lets say we have two members in each corp, A-1, A-2, B-1, B-2, C-1 and C-2
A-1, A-2, C-1 and C-2 form up a gang and run into B-1 and B-2
I know that by ganging up with members from Corp A, C-1 and C-2 have become aggroed to the B-members.
sofar the scenario. now, onto the questions.
1) B-1 shoots at A-1. Does this mean, because they are in the same gang, that C-1 and C-2 can shoot at B-1 without concord/sentry gun intervention?
2) B-1 shoots at C-1. Does this mean that C-1 can return fire at B-1 without concord/sentry gun intervention?
3) B-1 shoots at C-1. Does this mean that C-2 (because he is in the same corp as C-1) can retalliate aswell at B-1 without concord/sentry gun intervention?
4) B-1 shoots at C-1. Does this mean that C-1 or C-2 can retalliate aswell at B-2 (because he is in the same corp as B-1) without concord/sentry gun intervention?
Thats it...I'm hoping one of you can shine some light on this.

Question 1: C1 and C2 cannot shoot B1, until B1 shoots at them first, otherwise C1 and C2 will be concorded.
Question 2: C1 can return fire with no concord intervention. You can always defend yourself.
Question 3: C2 cannot shoot B1. All C2 can do to help is remote repair C1.
Question 4: C1 and C2 cannot shoot B2. Only C1 can shoot back at B1.

Its been a while since I've been in that situation but I thought if the aggressors were ganged, then you would be able to shoot both B1 & B2 since that gang would auto aggro?

It's only complicated if you follow the wrong train of thought.
You can know which corp a ship/pilot is in. You cannot know who they are ganged with (that you are not at war with). Allowing retaliation on a gang basis could lead to a Concord-sanctioned (in your example war-related) act having unpredictable consequences.
I ran into this question about a year ago with the slight difference that it related to ore theft rather than a war. We were having problems with an ore thief, and I was tasked with dealing with her. Shortly after, a Raven started hanging around about 100km away, and the mining op leader told me not to engage the ore thief for fear that it was ganged with the thief and would be allowed to attack if I did. It was clear to me that gang aggro would be entirely unfair and illogical, and I turned out to be right - when I did eventually attack the thief after a heated discussion with the op leader, the Raven locked but did not engage - presumably he expected to have attack rights but found out he didn't.
