A lot of the videos are now being encoded for VLC...which is awful for me. VLC lags so bad I can't watch the video, its just a blur of images that changes every so often...in WMP I can at least watch them, even if they are a bit laggy (I think theres a problem with my computer or something). Anyway, can you convert the .mvk file into a wma file once you have downloaded it? Cheers Dec

You mean WMV, of course, not WMA. WMA = audio file.
VLC is not the best choice because it has very flaky H.264 support. Don't use it.
Originally by: Dec V *EDIT* well ive downloaded CCCP and this is better, but the video keeps freezing for about 3 seconds then starting again
Your computer is too slow. Get CoreAVC or turn off deblocking in the FFDShow settings (slight speed boost, often not enough to get playback smooth).

That is very weird because the music is in AAC format, which is handled by the exact same filter that handles the video: it cannot break unless something else is actively breaking it. Do you have any other codec packs? If so, uninstall them and reinstall the CCCP with default settings.
If you want to convert them to WMV the best way is to use a WMV encoder that supports AviSynth scripts, like Nic's WMV Encoder, and then create an Avisynth script like "DirectShowSource("filename.mkv")" and use that as the input to the encoder.
CoreAVC should be able to play any H.264 video at any resolution within reason as long as your computer is made in the past 5-7 years, since its twice as fast and supports multithreading, for use on multiple cores. Using it I can watch 1080p HD movies with my laptop (Core 2 Duo 2Ghz) on battery mode (1Ghz).
Because of the issues people are having with H.264 decoding I suggest that people encoding very high-res videos (like Matari, 1920x1200, for example) encode a resized version for people with slower computers.

I always wonder why VLC is advertised so much in here. I have to admit it's a good choice when everything else fails but for your general video playback it awful. Imho you should use the Media Player Classic, if you got the codec it will play it.

MPC is just a DirectShow player, meaning it only plays what your system already has the codecs to support.
The CCCP, for example, is a pack of codecs that will play back various videos. The MPC is in a sense just a shell for them, unlike VLC, which includes them all built-in. Mplayer, a different player, is probably the best "everything built-in" player, and unlike the CCCP is available for both Linux and Mac also.
I do use MPC though as my main player though, I like its simplicity.
