I'd like to equip a scan probe launcher and do some exploration but my skills are not very high yet. I know a SPL runs 220tf so fitting will be a real headache. I'm currently learning Amarr Cruiser III so it shouldn't be long before I get my first cruiser but it would be worth it after the the SPL was fitted, little room left for anything else.
What ship would I need and what skills would be useful here, apart from the probe skills that is? Thx

I've been working on the same problem. I've read that the covops ships are probably the best for this purpose, both for fitting reasons and bonuses to using the probes. They're expensive though and I can't justify to myself buying one just for probing, then using my frigate or cruiser to do the killing. So, once I finish training up I'll just use the probe on my cruiser, bookmark when I find a target, then dock to switchout weapons/mods.

Check that link. That is your best option for fastest scan speeds. You are not really meant to have a probe launcher and a fully equipped ship. Probing is a role all in its own. Probe -> find exploration site -> bookmark -> switch ships -> run exploration site -> rinse and repeat. -------------------------------------------------- -=Student of Sun Tzu=- |

Thanks for that link Sol, that's a nice ship for sure but 40 days leaning so soon into my account would be very restrictive. I think I'll just get 2 cruisers for the time being, 1 for scanning and 1 for combat. That makes a lot of sense

Do yourself a favor and wait until you have good skills and the right gear. Scanning takes a long time, having the right gear and skills cuts down on the tim substantially.

I think this is good advice. Like I said, I'm working on the skills myself, but I would like relatively high (or at least decent) skills before I start using the probes. My big incentive for that though is ISK. Check out the prices of the probes on the market the next time you're in game. +30K ISK for a 10 min scan isn't something you want to waste with low skills.

Sound advice I guess, seems like an expensive hobby.

You can find "encounter sites" without a probe launcher by using your onboard ships scanner to search for cosmic signatures.
Probing in anything other than a covops is really inefficient

Cruisers suck for scanning out exploration sites, what you want is a ship with a bonus to astrometrics skills. Every race except Amarr has a tech1 frigate that does the job, and every race (including Amarr) has a covert ops frigate that gets a better bonus, once you train covert ops to 3 or higher.

Agreed. The t1 disposable frigs you can use are:
Caldari Heron:250tf Gallente Imicus:230tf and/or Maulus:220tf or the Minmatar Probe:220tf
Note that of these, only the Heron and maybe the Imicus will leave room for any other modules. But so what, they're cheap frigates, what else could you ask for at this stage, right? "Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes" |

Bit of trivia: The t1 frigates with scanner probe bonusses are invariably the precursor to that race's CovOps frigate, just as the missile boat is the precursor to the SB, the gunboat the precursor to the AF and the fast tackler the precursor to the interceptor.

Actually this is never true. The CovOps is always based on the E-War frigate, NOT the Astrometrics frigate.

Amarr Anathema (based on Crucifier) Crucifier - 5% bonus to Tracking Disruptor effectiveness per skill level Amarr does not have a T1 frigate with a bonus to Astrometrics
Caldari Buzzard (based on Heron) Heron - 5% reduction to duration/activation time of modules requiring Astrometrics per level. Griffin - 10% bonus to ECM Target Jammer strength and 10% bonus to ECM Target Jammers' capacitor need per level.
Gallente Helios (based on Maulus) Maulus - 5% bonus Remote Sensor Dampener effectiveness per skill level. Imicus - 5% reduction to duration/activation time of modules requiring Astrometrics per level.
Minmatar Cheetah (based on Vigil) Vigil - 5% Target Painter effectiveness per skill level. Probe - 5% reduction to duration/activation time of modules requiring Astrometrics per level.
Sorry, looks like your right. Never was too strong. There is the one exception with Caldari having its CovertOps based on its astrometrics frigate.
