He's not Ulffr. What kind of response are you expecting to get?
If you read my post you see I know he's not Ulffr. The response I'm expecting to get is a kind of plan of approach. A way in which he expects to get the same things done which CCP already hired someone for 2 years ago. Someone who obviously didn't manage to accomplish his goals since CCP now hired another person to try to do the same things.
In the least I hope for a response stating he'll have a nice long chat with Ulffr, if he's still around, to figure out which parts of Ulffr's approach did or didn't work within CCP.
I know how hard it is to get developers into the mindset of Quality Assurance. All I'm trying to do is help prevent a major disappointment for Lingrom.

Ulffr is still here, in fact he is my boss. He hired me to get this underway as he heads the 'whole' QA department. And yes we have spoken extensively and I have used his 'research' as the starting point for my planning. Which is well underway.
As for my approach ... well I have considered a number of approaches and have finally settled on a methodology. Not going to go into detail here. But it will allow us to add new tests on the fly and to enable 'non' coders to even author some of the tests.
I am finalizing my initial designs and will have the meeting to set 'target dates' next week. The 'Goal' is to have 60-70 percent of our current manual regression tests Automated for the testing of Revelations 3. I am not promising to hit that coverage, but it is the goal that we will be targeting.
We are already deploying test for the automatic 'testing' of parts of website and this will continue deployment over the next month. I am sure that you do not need the fine details on that other than to say that it is progressing and has already given us results.
Hope this answers your questions.

Your reply pleases me very much. And I'm sure others from the eve community that have a clue of QA will have the same feeling. I wish you the best of luck and am looking forward to your upcoming blogs :) Some day there will be a patch deployment without bug :) I'm confident.

Heh, funny that I get assigned to an automated regression testing project at work today and when I visit the website during a break I read a dev blog about the same stuff. (Note: I am only a college intern or otherwise yeah, I would submit my CV. )
Anyway, sounds like some great improvements and I can't wait for them to become a reality. --- Proud Amarr pilot.

I'm sure you're aware of the enormous lag problem in The Citadel/Santenpaa constellation, particularly Motsu and surrounding systems. I moved there shortly before RevII launched and the problem is even worse now that there are more mission runners farming LP. How are you going to address the load problem in these sort of "popular" systems that attract lots of mission runners because of the good agents?

So are any of these QA machines going to have Realtek sound cards in them?
Cause it's been almost a year since the realtek BSOD issues have been identified and confirmed as a known bug. Realtek has regularly released drivers since then and none of them have helped resolve the issue, despite several claims from CCP staff to the contrary.
Worse yet, the latest patch seems to have made things even worse for many Realtek users who don't have the money or free space in their computers to buy an expensive sound card for the sole purpose of playing eve.
Theres a 10 page thread STICKIED on the bug in the known issues forum and absolutely no response from any Devs or QA in it.
Is this really an acceptable situation to the QA department? ------ I am in blood! Stepp'd in so far that, should I wade no more, it would be as tedious as going over. -MacBeth |

It would be every so nice if someting could be done about the de-cync problems doing fleet fights. Ive had it in almost every large battle since rev II came out. A fix to this should be the highest on the list for the Q&A guys to get to sorted imho.

Dear Lingorm,
Do you think it's possible to detect when large scale fleet happen on the Tranquility? Perhaps it's interesting to create a couple of those monitoring agents that seek out and monitor them large scale fleet battles. Since that's what a lot of people have been complaining about. Lag at the events that are supposed to be the most fun in the game.
If you write agents for monitoring events like fleet battles, make sure they take enough distance (and perhaps not show on the combatants overviews somehow). We wouldn't want automated monitoring agents getting fired for bumping a dread :P

I just thought I chime in with my two cents. I know you guys have already probably considered this option, as I'm sure you guys are very smart people and I have every confidence that results will come, but have you considered building a small distributed QA client?
The main idea being to have the capability of scheduling scalable server test over real networks used by the customers. It can have a small executable that run in the background checking for a time to connect for testing, updating test routines/simulations, and acting on them when the EVE client isn't running or the computer isn't otherwise busy. You could plan large scale, specific client test from volunteer CPU cycles running on remote player's machines when they aren't being used.
The keypoint being, over real network paths, sending and recieving the exact kind of requests that you want to test. Say, I don't know, participating in a large battle on the test server or live during offhours, or browsing the market while using the web browser and auto-piloting while te map is open. Simple stuff that adds up the lag problems on the client and server, but can't quite tested becuase the conditions aren't quite right to duplicate.
Well, I think you get the idea. There's probably sme security issue there too, but I thought I throw this out there.
Good Luck with the testing and fixing. You guys are doing a great job with communicating the problems and getting them fixed. I'm a very happy gamer thanks to you guys.

I'm sorry for the Necro post... but I didn't feel like creating a new topic. Thought this would be a nice thread to continue.

Sooo Lingorm, Ulffr, who's gonna take the fall for this one?
Perhaps it's nice to not only test the patch on it's content, but also the test deployment scripts?
