i just heard of eve from a friend a couple weeks ago (living under a rock for the past 3+ years)and ive being playing the trial for the past 2 days and i think its an awesome game, however i have a couple questions: 1)the game is quite old, how much longer do you think people will keep playing it? 2) i read that older players have are permanently ahead of new players, is this true? 3)is so is there a chance of a new server for new players 4) haven't really talked to any one, but how is the player community? is it like barrens chat in wow?

1) EVE had half the playerbase a little over 1 year ago then it has now, And the number of active acounts continues to rise every motnh. So EVE is DEFINATELY not in decline and probebly won't be for some time. No worries about it dieing anytime soon.
2) Somewhat, but I started 3 years late "1 year old now" and although i started late by this time i'm not that disadvantaged. It takes a few months to really advance to the point you can easily compete but you're anything but impossibly outmatched. The truth is that most of the people who say they will be perminently disadvantaged are disadvantaged by their own newbieness and lack of forsight rather then by their skills training time.
3) NO, EVE has 1 world and will continue to have 1 world for as long as physically possible. It's part of the wonder of EVE that everybody shares the same world. And something that happens happens in your world not some far off server that doesn't effect you.
4) Don't mention WoW "unless in a bad light" except if you want to get flamed. Also the EVE community is much more mature then WoW and most MMOs since the "kiddies" don't have the patience to keep playing EVE. ________________

Welcome!
Quote: 1)the game is quite old, how much longer do you think people will keep playing it?
Old? She's not even broken in yet.
Quote: 2) i read that older players have are permanently ahead of new players, is this true?
Yes. Sort of. You can only fly one ship at a time and those ships only have so many mods that can be fit to them. So, in practicality, to players can meet up who have been in the game for differing amounts of time and be "maxed out".
Older players have more skill points and more flexibility in terms of the number of ships and systems that they can "max out".
The combat system in Eve is, however, more like rock-paper-scissors. So, you can be a lower skill player and have just picked a good set-up to kill someone you come across.
There is, however, always room for new players.
Quote: 3)is so is there a chance of a new server for new players
Doubt it.
Quote: 4) haven't really talked to any one, but how is the player community? is it like barrens chat in wow?
The Eve community's pretty unique and there are a lot of strong personalities. It's also big, and as you've probably noticed, all on one server. There is no comparison to WoW. You'll find groups of extremely honourable and nice players, and you find groups of complete jerks looking for nothing more than to kill you and steal all your stuff.

Ah, Barrens General, how I miss ye.
For something similar, you could try Local in Jita. If you like more lag and fewer "YOUR MOM LIEKS TEH BUMSECKS" recurring memes.
There are proportionately more math jokes in EVE.

Quote: 1)the game is quite old, how much longer do you think people will keep playing it?
As long as people are still willing to pay for it. From all accounts, subscriber numbers are up, so there's no danger of that soon
Quote:
2) i read that older players have are permanently ahead of new players, is this true?
Yes, you will never be able to have more sp than someone who started before you (unless they were a noob and didn't train learning. However, that just means that they might be 5-10% better than you, or fly more ships than you. It's not that big a deal.
Quote:
3)is so is there a chance of a new server for new players
No. The single server is Eve's big schtick, they're unlikely to change it
Quote:
4) haven't really talked to any one, but how is the player community? is it like barrens chat in wow?
From my own experience, the community can be extremely elitist at times. In all seriousness, I would hesitate to tell people you used to play wow, as there's a distinct possibility you'll get verbally abused for doing so. Like every game, eve has it's bad apples. WoW had immature brats, eve has elitist basement dwellers, you choose which is worse

I have to second these answers and add to that the fact that the EVE community is probably one of the best MMO communities out there especially considering the masses of fansites, the community is very mature and 99% of the players will help you out with advice and maybe even a few isk if you catch them in the right mood, also welcome to EVE may you be an addict like the rest of us :) ---------

Oh and just because someone vaporizes your ship doesn't mean they won't help you avoid them next time. In reality if you open up a conversation with the guy who killed you and ask what you did wrong chances are they'll respect you for knowing that it's just a game and help you avoid making the same mistake(s). ________________

1) There are plans for the next 10 years. As long as there is no better alternative (real PvP in big groups) ppl will stick with this game.
2) If they are smarter then you, yes. If you are smarter then them, it depends. It all comes down who you play with. It's up to you to take advantage of abilities of other players. Nobody will come and hold your hand in that regard.
3) No. CCP has some sort of allergy against the idea of sharding.
4) It all depends how do you approach them. Throw them with insults and you will see insults in return. Thread them with respect and you will get respect in return.
--
There are countless games in the world. There are at least as many ppl that dont like one or more rules of said games. That never stopped smart game designers from creating good games.

There's no quick or easy answers to these questions because there are so many possible combinations.
There are 5000 solar systems you can visit, for example.

Now i'm off the opinion that nobody can answer this question fully, the general concensus is to train up your learning skills first which while not as interesting will enable you to learn new skjills faster, as for skills and ships well with the vast assortment of ships out there its down to you to find that ship for you, it might help to know what sort of player you want to be, do you want to be a builder or someone who is more of a support player or someone who is a heavy hitter there are roles and ships out there for everyone :) ---------

Eve is pretty horrible to start with. Don't expect to really enjoy yourself until 2-3 months into the game. The real game begins in 0.0 sec space when you get a battleship+.
Try not to mention WoW, there seems to be a rabid hate for WoW in this MMO community. I can only imagine it's jealousy of WoWs complex scripted battles and massive player base.
Veteran players of Eve seem to feel that the poor game design weeds out the less intelligent players. Personally I think it's kind of sad that they exalt major game flaws as features.
If you're a space sim junkie like I am, you will be mildly disapointed at the lack of first person views like you're used to in pretty much every space sim ever made. All in all, you have no alternatives so love it or leave it. Or wait for infinity. http://www.fl-tw.com/Infinity/

Indeed i wouldn't overly listen tho this person as he seems somewhat biast, there is i'll admit a dislike for WoW but only because its competition, of note for the last atleast 2 years running EVE has beaten WoW in player polls so that must prove something and unlike WoW you never pay for EVE epansions its a mandatory patch :)
All in all EVE may be a little more epensive than some but i think it more than makes up for that with content and the fantastic communication between players and dev alike :) ---------

I just went through my first eve expansion, and I can answer this. What eve calls expansion packs, wow calls content patches. Hell, 2.1 was the biggest content patch in wow history and I'd say it was roughly the size of revelations 1 and 2 put together

I'm not biased, I'm just not a fanboy and call it like I see it. When veterans tell you to get drunk and watch a movie if you're going to be mining there is a serious flaw in the game mechanic.
WoW has expansion packs and "content patches". A wow content patch is free and contains about twice the content of a Eve expansion.

By EVE standards WoW doesn't have content, just various shades of grind.
