Edited by: Soulbound Bob on 10/07/2007 23:07:20 There have been many scammers throughout EVE. Many people hear of EVE through stories of such scams and other ruthless tactics used in EVE. Everyone says that old scams never work, but is that true?
Today I made a demonstration. It was quite easy all i had to do was remember the scam I have seen done many times before, I went up to round 6 and because people are so naive and if 1 person does it everyone else wants to I could have kept going If I had the isk to pay back double at that point but I did not. I wasn't even in a caldari corp. It does not matter what the details are but the main sentences is always the same.
There were of course skeptics and those who told everyone that this scam has been done countless times. Most of them just blocked me and let all the others fall for the scam. It goes "Send me any amount of isk and I will pay back double".
So I started at round 1 with 100 million at my disposal. What if I backed out at the end of the round would I lose isk? here are the official results
Round 1 103 million
Round 2 102 million
Round 3 100.6 million
Round 4 117 million
Round 5 98 million
Round 6 272 million (yes you are reading this correctly)
There have been numerous High yield investment scams that take a bit longer than an hour and sometimes months, they will net you hundreds of billions accordingly.
Please do not fall for scams and help any newbs asap. I hope CCP puts a rigid enforcement against this type of thing or some sort of GUIDE somewhere in the beginner tutorial.
I will shortly return the isk to those who sent it in for round 6. I can only hope they learn the lesson.
And yes there is a carbon copy of this thread in all the forum sections.
You must understand that anyone asking you to give money to get money is scamming you one way or another. |

Apparently even a channel filled with people screaming "scammer!" and explaining how the scam works isn't enough to stop stupid people throwing their money away.

Wait...I heard if I came into this topic I'd win isk. I'm confused? Who do I give the money to?

Thanks for bringing us this important message Bob. You'd have actually taught those trusting newbs a much better lesson by keeping the round 6 ISK.
Keep it in mind for next time >_^

So, you ran an old scam, possibly honestly, to show how scams can be run? And that proves what, exactly? Scams only work on those who believe they can get something for nothing, or at an unexpectedly good price. You cannot cheat an honest man...

This is not to detail how to scam but to avoid scams that ask you to give something to get a unreal and much larger return.

Soulbound... yes, after telling people it was a scam the second I saw your text, they threw their isk at you.
Just keep it all. The only way some learn is through pain.
Change or continue to suffer you dolts.

There was no need to post this over and over again.
Basically, 90% of the people who talk in the channel were saying it was a scam. The other 10% were ignoring you or already had you blocked.
Those people who STILL fell for it deserve to be scammed. However, yes, many people in this corp are new players.

I just assume that anyone asking for *anything* is a scam. I fly around, do missions and mind my own buisness in EVE, scam free...so far.

I'm new to the game and learning EVE. I farm minerals and build my skill sets. I thought it was informative and well explained. I learned something today ... I learned that the free flow of honest communications can really be hashed out over and over again...and did i say over again. Welcome to EVE !!!

Scamming is a valid profession in EVE. Don't ruin it for dedicated scammers. They play the game fairly just like you do, they just use different tactics to get ahead.

I wonder if this would still work if you started a character named "scammer alt" in order to run it on nubs. _____ Heat Warfare |

Edited by: Stakhanov on 11/07/2007 01:49:30 Old stupid scam still works after people talked about it ? Unthinkable !
If you aren't keeping the ISK , what are you trying to achieve ? Form a protection group for mentally challenged players ?
Oh , and fyi - scamming is allowed in Eve , and there is a section of the tutorial about it.
Quit spamming the forums and start stockpiling ill-gotten gains. It's only a success if you make billions off it.

Alt scamming may be too easy and profitable for very low risk it has , yes - but making ISK is too easy in the first place. Complete idiots can accumulate too much ISK for their own good... which is why scamming is needed. It's so easy that even lesser scammers get scammed.
As for hurting people - it's the cleanest way of robbing them. No wreck in space , no splattered pod , no destroyed loot - ISK smoothly moves from the prey to the predator with no loss. Compare this with my corp's famed brute-force approach to ISK draining

People can avoid low security places. If everyone is getting free money the temptation can be overbearing if the risks are not fully understood.

Oh please, don't pretend that this post ruins things for the scammers! My most profound experience with this was on the Ships channel. A guy got on the channel and said "Did so-and-so just scam me?" Us channel veterans, very familiar with that scammer, explained exactly what had been done and confirmed that it was a scam. But we were interrupted by a pilots saying "[Scammer] just [pulled exactly the same scam on me]! Beware!"

So whats wrong with allowing people to make mistakes? Dont you think it could actually be a good experience to let people make them and learn from them? Its getting really annoying with this mentality of letting the ones in charge block out everything that could be remotely dangerous.
Im not a scammer, but I think scams add to Eve. Its a game for grownups and if you make mistakes, you get consequences. Thats the way it should be in a real virtual world.

I'm pretty sure this guy just thinks he's being St. Eve or something.
