It would be interesting to see how many people participated in the questionaire to compile this report, because im pretty sure it wouldn't be every American household.
IF it IS accurate where are all these female gamers and wha game are they playing because i want to be there!!! Er.....SIGNATURE |

When they use words like "Essential Facts", you know its a lie. This is typical blown-up, and out of scale "watch us, see how good we are" news.

By "online gamers", I think they mean "anyone playing games online" meaning "moms playing TextTwist."

"67% of American heads of households play computer or videogames.
38% of gamers are female. 47% of all online gamers are female.
51% of gamers play games online, up from 19% in 2000."
so... take 100% - 51% play online games, and 47% of that are women.
Which is roughly 25% give or take - which can be read as 1 woman for 3 men -
I wish they included sexual orientation, and relationship status in those stats though - I reckon 3/4 of those women are married, not straight, not interested in a relation ships - which brings it at 1 woman for erm 1 woman for 4/5 men? or something - then the age bracket comes in - how many are actually within your own AGE range? :S - Oh man - no wonder those dating sites don't work :D -------------------------------------------------- No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. -------------------------------------------------- |

I can confirm that American women play games.
They also play unfair.
They also cheat.
They also make up/change the rules quite often.
They will ban you.

"47% of all online gamers are female."
What? This can't be true. I played WoW for one and a half year and I didn't meet more than 10 female players(myself not included), and yet it was one of the biggest and oldest servers.

"Online games" != fantasy MMORPGs
Fantasy MMORPGs are a mostly male subsection of online games.
Oh, and you only met 10 female players? What about the thousands of males pretending to be female?

There are plenty of female gamers out there. Just because a female "plays games", doesn't mean she plays the same games, or the same way, that we play them. My wife is a "gamer" by product of me being one. She wants to share in my hobby, so she plays games too. Hell, she is playing EVE with me now. She doesn't get in to it like I do, she isn't in to the PvP aspect, and she likes to hang out in Domain, but she plays.
I think a lot of female gamers are still closet gamers. They are in the stage male gamers were 10-15 years ago, when being a gamer wasn't "cool". Now playing video games is cool, at least for men. It's still seen as a very un-girl thing to do, so many girls will keep their game playing under wraps. Many girls also play different kinds of games than men. Sure, I've had my chest punctured with shot gun rounds by a girl in Gears of War, but it's very rare. On the other hand, I've seen plenty of girls playing PuzzleQuest and Bejeweled. That's not to say that girls can't excel at the more "hardcore" games, it's that they usually don't play them.
As far as women in online games, I know my wife has played a male character before simply to stop people form knowing she was a real female. Being a real female in the online arena tends to get you one of two things: People that become too respectful and are afraid to talk and act like themselves around you (and to some extent you get the knight in shining armor syndrome), and those who will go out of their way to make girls uncomfortable.

I know quite a few smokin' girl gamers, my wife included. The problem is, they never tell anyone they are female or good looking, because the nerd-gasm would be felt 'round the world when the fourteen year old Troll Shaman who's sitting in his parents basement tries to fap to the pictures. Seriously.

Not entirely true. DAOC on hib devon they have a gal called Eaderbreca and she's announce time and time again that she's a girl and now has a HUGE fanlist on myspace. You can find it by doing a search on myspace under the same name.

Well, she is lucky or an attention *****, or both. My wife has gotten all kinds of "interesting" responses when people find out she is a girl. The response generally varies by the age of the response giver. Most men over 30 don't care, most men in their 20's try and be her boyfriend and lay coats over mud puddles for her and most men under 18....well, you can figure out what most of the teenagers want. I've observed this first hand, as she used to raid with me in WoW. Of course, WoW has such a huge community that you are going to find some mouth breathers in the crowd.

Yeah one of my old time friends who played DAOC has a 16 year old daughter who plays too (who is cute but jailbait for me) and he is super paranoid about who she talks to in game. He's even gone as far as logging in her character to see who pm's her right off.

the stats aren't fakes or lies but probably distortions and misrepresentations. they'll take into account things like habbo hotel or online tetris and count them i as "gamers", because that makes for stats that looks interesting. i mean obviously it caught YOUR eye didn't it?
what over 40%+ gamers are girls? ZOMG! Must post on forums.
these girls would by our definition certainly NOT be gamers. and those that are, well, are, but it doesn't matter that they're girls, 98% of the time anyway. and since like 98% of gamers are (that's a stat i found somewhere that i though much more accurate) male to begin with, that means only 2% of 2%, or .04% are good lookin gamers.
So either loon to accept mingers that can actually be choosy and b****y or abandon hope for a gamer girl. Or don't and maybe get really really lucky.

The "gamer girls" you usually know in games are usually the one's society would call "less attractive" so they make themselves known in games to make up for the lack of attention from guys outside the game. The "good looking" ones generally keep a low profile to avoid that same attention.
When I played Lineage 2, I kept getting hit on by "female" players who would send me links to their myspace or whatever. Man I felt like stabbing my eyes with a redhot poker. Pretty much all of them were not what I would call "attractive". Well, there were the twins who were co-leaders of the clan I ran... They were rawr material.

Well, I don't see a problem with women not being extremely HOT Razor Sharp Vixens from the Venusian Lowlawnd of the Gorgeous Hills of Voluptuosity and Sexyness. I like them all , bleh some of my best friends are what you guys might call "fat chicks", they are a mountain of fun :P , bleh wish at least some of them PLAYED EVE <:P . For some reasons, as someone ingame pointed out a while ago on the Amarr Channel, EVE won't have a sizeable female community 'till we get "Walking in Stations" feature. Despite the /dance macro spammers that might pop up, the women psyche will feel more connected to an environment with a viewable avatar than most of us abstract minded males are used to with just looking at ships and making them spin faster in stations.
