Hi
I have exactly the same set-up and had the same problem. It is a known issue with this card.
You should download the driver dated 02/05/2003 (No 4.4.0.3). Completely un-install the existing driver and install this earlier version.
This is CCP advise and a well documented issue. Since doing so I have had no problems and now have 6 mill skill points.
Dont let it ruin the game for you.

I've had similar problems as well. Upgrading/re-installing your video driver and upgrading/re-installing your directX are the first things to try.
I've heard turning your sound cards hardware acceleration off completely helps some people, but all that did for me was make the game sound horrible.
It's pretty frustrating. I spent 3 days tweaking my computer and reading the forums before I could play again. Don't know what caused it but it is a pretty widespread problem.
Hope you get it running okay again soon.

Melany. Another thing to check is to make sure that you have the latest security updates for Windows from Microsoft, especially if you are using XP. I had exactly the same problem and it turned out that I had one of those virus that were able to exploit some loop hole in the Win XP set up

The MX440 doesn't have pixel shading... And I believe the warp effect uses some pixelshading. The 44.03 driver must have a pixelshader bypass for MX400 cards.
At least that is the explanation I can come up with.
Just so you know.
