..your intended fleet battle size for this game?
Such a specification would serve several good purposes.
It would set a focus for future development and improvement of this game.
It would place a quality metric to help keep the game great.
So for example, if under reasonable network conditions eve could only handle say 20 v 20 (or 40 players on same grid) without excessive lag, and you are happy with this amount, than say so. (note: im not saying 40 players is the figure, its a completely mad up number)
If the desired figure is in reality far less, then still specify it, and consider the shortcoming as a focus for improvement, with a relative priority to other developments such as new content. You decide.
It clearly cant handle battles with a few hundred players without several seconds of lag, and it may be unrealistic to achieve that, then specify that too, and place controls in systems/grids to ensure those figures arent broken.
I feel a common problem could be immense disappointment with the gaming experience if a fleet battle, believed to be numbering within reasonable parameters, fails to live up to reasonable expectations.
I feel it would even be fine to specify say 200 v 200, even if in reality that wasnt being achieved. Because then the degree to which the intended specification falls short helps determine priority to fix.
There are many fine things to balance in this game, most of which are done well, a game mechanic or two to limit engagements to a handleable responsive size would keep a level of gameplay quality high while other means were investigated to improve performance.
Enough typing, im off to fly a spaceship now

It would get abused, 1 side would simply try to get more people on the grid faster then the other, thats why ccp isn't releasing figures.
CCP, let us pay the online shop with Direct Debit!!! Magners is now recruiting, evemail me or Dagazbo ingame.

My guess is that "as big as possible" would be their goal.

Its a sandbox...there is no limit to the number of castles/buckets/spades you can build/fill/bring to any building/filling/digging sessions.

eventualy the sandbox runs out of sand ... or room in that case building another castle means on of the old ones dies or gets destroyed ... if we know how big and plentifull our sandcastles can be we can tune our building to that and avoid the great "rain cloud of serv reboot" to wash everything away. but yah ... it could be abused by some big kid with a big spatula who trenches out the etire sandbox and uses his cool bucket to just build the entire sandbox full of dull sandastles and rule the entire area ...... yah .

Wow, the sandbox metaphor is actually pretty accurate.
