Hello,
I'm hoping someone here could answer a question I got about sentry guns. Now, I'm cruising along peacefully in a 0.4 system, and I come to a gate where a ship that's over 70km from the sentries locks on to me and starts firing.
If they fire at me first, can I fire back without the sentries killing me, regardless of the security status of the people that targetted me in the first place?

Dont fire within 50km of them or your toast. That includes 1.0 to 0.0 empire apace. The only time you can fire within that range is if you are being attacked. Otherwise your ass is grass unless your fast, or can take a beating from them.

You can return fire without any retaliation from the sentries. You will not however be able to jump/dock once you return fire for a minute as you you are involved in an aggresion.
It is normally a safe bet to just make a run for the gate rather than return fire depending on what ship they are in and how much dmg you can take etc.

if you think you can take the ship/s out then go for it. Most ships sat that far out are set-up for the specific purpose of ganking at range and can't handle a full on fight. Just ensure he's got a -5.0 sec rating or worse OR he shot you first
If you don't fancy taking him on then all you can do is warp away or run for the gate. Depends how much damage he/she/they are doing

One other question relating to this issue is, what if the guy ganking people attacks a pilot that's currently in a gang, ie he's targetting just 1 ship out of 3 for example. Can all the people in the gang fire back at the gatecamper without getting shot by sentries? |

normally i m not giving carebear advices, but as you can t destroy them shooting is completly useless:
lot s of risk, no chance of success.
think first, then shoot.

I knew this was coming, thanks for the totally useless answer. I guess you were never a new player yourself, but born a top-notch character right? |

You may NOT help gangmates in need. Stupid, silly and most likely a bug, but dems da breaks.
If you want to gang up on the camper, find a warpable object behind him, go to it, then warp to 60k of the gate. Odds are, you'll be right on top of him and also out of range of the guns.

Thats a good idea as the sentry guns sometimes do not register the fact they fired first. The sentry guns then see you as the aggressor and do you instead, while the pkers look on and laugh.
Obviously if they're -5 then its not an issue. But I still don't trust the sentry guns. If the sentry guns don't behave themselves you have got absolutely no chance of being compensated by CCP.

What an idiotic thing to say.
So you never asked someone a question in EVE, not even when you started playing?
On a second note. You know the difference on a carebear and a newbie? (mean no offence to the question)

I think you missed english 101 and "I" normally don't tell people they should speak rather than type, but in this case...

Since he answered a newbie's question and offered carebear-style advice, which he says he doesn't like doing; then yes, I'd guess he knows the difference. It very much looks, however, as though YOU don't. That or you're not even capable of reading his post properly.

carebear advice? sounds like newb advice to me.
carebear advice would be, stay in 1.0 space, mine roids till your eyes bleed, and don't travel with anything slower than a frigate with 3 MWD
