iirc its a pretty simple bug in the kill-tracking system. some nutter dumps a pile of shuttles out in space, maybe even right in front of a station. the exact number is fuzzy. they then smartbomb the heck out of them. end result is scary red spot.

Ah, that doesn't sound like a bug -- the ships were actually destroyed.
