im new and would like to get some info on ships and how to equip them best to mine. i would like to know the best ship for mining and what lasers and other stuff i need to get going. some nice person gave me some money so i got the best laser i could find and i mine quite fast now but would like all the help i can get. maybe even the best stuff to mine and where to find it.

Each race has a mining frigate and Caldari and Minmatar has a mining cruiser.
Frigates:
Amarr - Tormentor
Caldari - Bantam
Gallente - Navitas
Minmatar - Burst
Cruisers:
Caldari - Osprey
Minmatar - Scythe
Best idea if you want to mine is to start in a frigate and train to be able to fly your race's industrial ships (cargo haulers) this way you can anchor Giant Secure Cans in the asteroid belts and mine into them then come back in the industrial ship and pick it up instead of going back and forth all the time.
You will hear about jetcan mining but don't bother with that untill you have a corp that can protect you from orethives. It's more efficient but in turn it carries greater risk.
Eventually you will want to be train twoards Mining barges, Don't bother with the smallest one go directly for the Retriever the continue to Covetor and if you feel mining is you buisness in eve you might want to train towards the tech 2 mining barges called Exhumers.
Main rule when it comes to mining in Empire space is the lower the security rating of the system the better the ores are.
You might want to start with Scorodite and Plagioclase/pyroxeres then move on to Omber/Kernite.
You can "safely" mine in systems with a security status 0.5 and above. But beware the lower the security status the more powerfull the belt NPC's are.

Although you got excellent advice in the above post, I think the threat of ore theives is overrated. I have mined quite a bit, and unless your mining a trade hub or something goofy like that, ore can thieves are really pretty rare. I think i have had ore stolen exactly twice in my eve career. Train industrials asap and jet can mine. Its much better isk per hour, even if you factor in the rare incident when some jerkwad messes with your can.
BTW, jet can mining in breif means instaed of flying back to the station every time the hold is full, you jetison the ore and then add more ore to the cargo container as it comes in. You then come back with an industrial ship and haul it back to the station when you have full hauler load ready. The "danger" is that anyone can come along and grab ore out of the can, but as i said in my experience that is rare, espcially if you mine in an out of the way system.
Something to consider, however, is that when you jet can mine you spend alot of time in one belt, so an npc pirate will show up sooner or later. You need some way to deal with that, be it a friend in a combat fig, some combat drones, or a gun in place of one of your mining lasers (the last option is last ditch, you want as many mining lasers running as possible).

Scilent Enigma, how wude! Amarr are already overlooked enough as it is. The Arbitrator with Mining Drones (don't use Harvesters!!) is a perfectly capable mining cruiser, including drone mining yield bonuses!

Ah ok.. Just did a quick scan through the item database to check up on which cruisers etc. Must have missed that bonus.
