Everyone,
I have spent the last few months working on ways to make ISK to support my future PVP aspiration, and have been very successful!
The problem is, now I have to actually figure out my PVP aspirations!
I have trained Caldari up until this point. Should I stick with that or maybe go to another? Which ships should I look to fly in the future? Which ships should I take out for practice? I don't mind if I have to spend a little while training up. I have plenty else I could be doing.

Start off with a couple basic ships to specialize in to fit your playing style. I would go for some kind of BC and a faction/T2 frig. This will allow you to participate in most skirmish PvP. For larger fleet stuff, a turret based BS (preferably minatar or amarr) is good to have around as well.
If you want to save a bit of time and stick with caldari go with one of the interceptors for tackle, and the Drake/Naga for general skirmish warfare.

if ur goin to stick with caldari is to start off using the hawk then move ur way up to onyx then tengu. ( yes i know i skipped the drake but i really hate the fuckin ship every time i see 1 i just want to take a **** on it )
if u dont mind cross training then i would say matar ships or gallente. amarr just sucks as they can do only so many things with the fits. doesnt really leave room for anything other then cookie cut fits
matar ship give more room to play with in terms of fitting. prob the most fit friendly ship types in the game.
gallente give u gank with tank a plus the drones boats take care of the frigs real quick.
really tough to say who u should train for if u dont know wat type of flying style ur goin for which will dictate wat skills u should train.
but since ur starting out heres a tip. dont try to solo in low sec. u will die. alot. |

Glad to hear!  welcome to PvP and as a hole EVE on-line!
So for frigs- merlin as heavy tackle
cruisers- blackbird as support, AMLcoracal as a frig killer
BC- nano HML drake as fleet ship
BS- scorpion support, Rohk sniper
As you are just starting PvP stick to T1 stuff till you have lost about 60 of them, for real.
As in life you learn from failing and mistakes do not be afraid to die,welcome the lessons it brings.
Don't over extent your resources, pimping ships/starting in T2/faction ships will just drain you and give you a bad rep/KB.

Merlin is pretty good, Hawk, Hookbill for frigs.
Then you have the Caracal, which is slightly less bad than most other T1 cruisers, along with the Navy Carac, which is kinda cool for kiting and nano stuffz.
Drakes, I love Drakes, I fly Drakes constantly, most because it pisses people when I do without me having to do anything. Most other ships, you have to win the fight to actually extract tears, but with a Drake, you get the tears upfront.
Tengus are boss-mode.

I actually want to use a Tengu once I am better acquainted with the PVP system in the game.
I have used a Drake for missions but wasn't sure of its viability in PVP.
Maybe ill buy a dozen or so Caracals and fit them up, roam on our and see what I can lose! |

Pretty much.
T2 HAM Drakes can will **** once in range.
Nano HML Drakes kite like a boss
Hookbills are sexy w/ the new texturing.
The more important question is what kind of PvP'er do you want to be? Solo / small gang / fleet / blob / etc...then go from that point.

Actually I think I'll be going out solo for the first bit to practice up, so maybe throwing a cloak on something would be a good idea.
Just wanted to make sure sticking with Caldari wasn't a complete waste of time. I've read they aren't the most effective PVP group out there. Not sure how accurate that is |

Beware the negative aspects of the cloak if you're not flying cov-ops. Once decloaked, expect to target something in about a week. If you want to try cloaky pvp, go Manticore.
Also, the only thing that pisses people off more than Drake is Falcon. Also cloaky, but then you're into ECM, which is its own little sphere of tears/gameplay. Blackbird into Falcon ftw.
I suggest you spend time learning PVP in a fleet before trying solo. I know that flies in the face of much advice you will hear, but there are so many advantages. People forget how much time they spent learning basic gameplay skills and mechanics. Being part of a gang is a lot more forgiving than trying to learn solo. Your gang will be very quick to tell you how you ****ed up and how to get it right next time. In general, they will be somewhat understanding. After all, they're the ones who let a noob into their corp, so hopefully they understand you'll need time to catch up. If not, find someone else willing to train/tolerate you in fleet. There are many, and you will learn faster.

Just based off assumption here, as a tengu pilot you're the guy sitting off 90km away with a nice line of missiles bombarding your target while someone else is in a throw away ship tackling? Or do you really get in there even with a tengu...
Having lost my bear to being a noob a while back I've become far more hesitant and precautious to avoid more costly stupid mistakes... |

as a tengu piloit i play in the range of 24k to 60k. the advantange of this is ur safe from nuets webs ( if its not a loki, rapier is or curse ) and u do the same amount of dmg within those ranges. the idea is to use ur speed to kite and keep range. nano cane, vagabond and cynabal piloits do the same.
u would be surprised how much micro management is involed when taking on several targets. staying 90k out would be pointless as the missles would take too long to reach ur target and ur takle could be dead by that time. that kind of gang works better with bombers as they do alot more dmg per volley vs the tengu at range. |

As a fellow PVP newbie let me offer you the following tip.
Kiting, when compared to all the PvE stuff you've done so far, is way harder. It's not bad with 1vs1, but against multiple opponents it gets very tricky to keep range on all of them at once. Get good at manual flying, because "Set Orbit" just isn't going to cut it.
I hear frigates are great to practice this, but I hate them so I don't fly them.
Nano Drakes are really good at it too.
100mn Tengus are incredible kite ships, but you lose 1b whenever you screw up.
I have also seen some really good brawler Tengu fits that run HAMs. Think Garmon has a video of that kinda thing somewhere, but he had a booster alt and loads of extra ISK dumped in the ship (and the drugs).
I know sometimes it's difficult to realize just how much you spend on incidental things each month or year, but seriously, EVE is very cheap entertainment compared to most things... If you are a smoker, smoke one less pack a week and pay for EVE, with money left over to pick up a cheap bundle of flowers for the EVE widow upstairs. |

Personally I enjoy a good hot drop. Of course by hot drop I mean that thing that Bai Ling does for me at the massage parlor after hours. There is nothing better than a good steaming hot drop. |

The merlin has a special place in my heart as the ship I burned by the dozen trying to learn to kill internet spaceships. Unlike some other ships, the Merlin is pretty versatile in fittings. Off the top of my head there are:
MSE+Blasters/autocannons Brawler
MSE+Rails Kiter (or my personal favorite, the Gatling Pulse Laser MSE merlin. Goooood times )
Medium shield BOOSTER/Autocannons duelist, Jude Lloyd of the Heretics does some amazing things with this. I fought him a few times in what I believed to be a comparable fit. I lost.
Dual-web armor Merlin
Lots of ways to fit the humble Merlin. You can try a bunch of different playstyles and find what you like, then figure out what ship does it better.
For simplicity, I also recommend the Nano Brutix. You hunt, you find, you MWD, you overheat everything, and you cross your fingers. First outing in it, I managed to land on a nano drake @ zero. I proceeded to burn him down while he called in one, two, five, and eventually SEVEN of his friends. I warped out in my pod, believing myself the loser. Imagine my surprise and triumph when I found that the Drake and I had popped simultaneously. |
