A Book Review of Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds
Revelation Space is set in a universe very similar to Eve Online, where mankind has splintered into different groups who fight wars and explore, populating the galaxy. Therefore, the book should appeal to all Eve players and particularly those who enjoy exploration, archaeology, politics, bounty hunting, or combat!
Revelation Space revolves around the destruction of an alien species a million years before. Sylveste, an archaeologist who uncovers the remains of the aliens on a barren moon, thinks they were space travellers who somehow brought about their own destruction. Few believe him, but a mysterious lady who knows a secret blackmails a bounty hunter to kill him. The mysterious lady fears Sylveste's actions may trigger humanity's destruction. The fourth main character, Volyova, should appeal to PvPers and PvEers. She is a weapons specialist aboard a Titan-sized spaceship, crewed by a handful of cyborgs, who seek Sylveste because he may be the only man who can cure their dying Captain. To complicate matters, the ship is inhabited by an elusive computer virus that has a sinister personality and it's own agenda!
It's all great fun and the eventual unravelling of what happened to the aliens is exciting and interesting. The characters are well drawn and the pace is good.
Like Eve Online, the universe of Revelation Space is nicely detailed. The author is a professional astrophysicist who really knows his subject.

Good review!
I read this book years ago, and followed up with the rest in the series as they came out over time. Also have read Diamond Dogs/Turquoise Days, as well as Pushing Ice.
Choosing my favorite of the series is tough - I would say that Redemption Ark is definitely one of my faves along with Revelation Space. I disliked Absolution Gap slightly - no spoilers, don't worry. Chasm City is pure awesome, an excellent read and I sincerely wish Reynolds would revisit that portion of his Revelation universe and the affiliated characters.
If you have yet to read any Reynolds, start with Revelation Space.
Also, gotta say I agree with the above poster - loved Excession.

Thank you both!
After I've finished reading Absolution Gap, I'll read Excession!
