I'm currently flying a Rifter and loving it. My next step will be a Wolf or Jaguar.
At first sight, the Jaguar looks like an artillery platform, and the Wolf AC. But neither ship inherits the Rifter's tracking bonus. Is this just a display problem, or do they really not get a bonus to tracking? Is an AC setup on a Wolf workable or will poor tracking cripple it? |

Tracking is fine imo, but the only 2 meds on a Wolf...i wouldn't use AC's on it. :)

I believe you get 0.42 radians / sec with 150mm AC IIs and motion predicition IV, what's very fine, especially if you consider that you'll have a webber available in the Jaguar. I see the lack of a tracking bonus more crippling for a artillery Jaguar setup* then a AC setup. 200mm AC IIs might have a problem. Anyway, I'd say both are very fine AC boats.
The Wolf is crippled by lack of third midslot, and it's somewhat heaver and a lot slower then the Jag and immensely heavier & slower then the Rifter. I find it inferior to the Jaguar as a PvP ship (although the extra damage IS nice). Kiting with small ACs on a Wolf isn't going to happen anyway (too heavy and falloff is still problematic even with rigs), so the falloff bonus doesn't make it much better then the Jag at using ACs.
* At least the thing I was trying to do with it.
PS. I forgot, sorry. Switch Wolf and Jaguar bonuses and give all AFs their fourth bonus. And 20% less mass across the board for all AFs, so they have only 30-40% more weight then their respective T1 counterparts!

The way i see it Jag is a solo pirate ship. If used in a gang it could serve as a heavy tackler, but i find that kind of pointless. The wolf on the other hand is a gang anti-support ship. The more high slots provide decent DPS and you can use it to pop tacklers, dictors or cruisers. Using it solo would be kind of tricky though, thanks to those ridiculous 2 mids.
I currently fly Jag and it's alright. Still i'd fly Hurricane every day over Jag :P [-------------------------------------------------] Tears stream behind my visor, but eyes look unblinking at the world |

Edited by: RuriHoshino on 17/07/2007 18:09:20 The Wolf is the AF I fly most often, because I'm not in the gang to tank and it's dps is far superior to the Jag's. I think it's prettier, too, but whatever. When I'm ganged I can still hit 900 m/s with an AB in deadspace, and that's enough for me to not feel like a slowboat. With T2 arties I can punch from 30k also, so closing to knife range isn't necessary, but having a web on can come in handy if you need to tackle something for your bigger gangmates.
I used to be impressed with the dps on an AC Wolf, but it really can't tank at close range because ASSAULT SHIPS HAVEN'T GOTTEN THEIR FOURTH BONUS FFS. Since artillery is unquestionably the better fit for the Wolf's role, their bonuses should be switched too goddammit. My Wolf setup is thus:
4x 250mm II 1x Gist A-Type AB, 1x X5 Web 1x SAR II, 1x Shadow Serpentis Adaptive Nano, 2x Gyro II
I use the shadow nano because it uses 1 grid and no cpu, and almost nothing else will fit that is worth the slot on this boat. AF's are odd ducks, to be sure, though the price has come down recently thanks to invention. If you're used to the Rifter as an AC boat, get a Jag and it will fly similarly while being much tougher. If you're used to using arties and launchers, the Wolf will suit your style. _
