Do afterburners have a role in PvP if you pilot a Vagabond, Huginn, or Tempest?
At the moment, MWDs seem popular for PvP, and AB seem better for PvE. Am I wrong?
I'm new at Eve Online - please give me your views!

I do believe you need the skills to use an AFB in order to fit a MWD.. so you are gonna get them anwyays.. its up to you, if you wan tot use an AF in PvP ------------ This is not War... This is pest control - Dalek Sek

A Tempest pilot might sometimes use an AB instead of MWD, the other two are MWD 23/7 or you're an idiot. If you're roaming with a gang, fit a MWD always. If you're camping a gate, well you can get away with not having one on a sniper ship like a Tempest fitted with artillery.

That's not a bad rule of thumb. It will be right much more often than wrong, and when it's wrong, the ship in question probably doesn't need an afterburner, either.

The only time I would fit an AB on a **** for PvP is when the ship has a severe grid deficiency. MWD uses quite a bit more pg than an AB so if you really must have that extra speed then there is little choice. Your not going to waste a low slot or rig slot for just another 50m/s.

On some ships the MWD isent worth it, why make a slug the fastest slug around. In the end your still a slug.
Like someone else mentioned MWD are worthless in deadspace so the AF is needed there. Also some ships need there cap more then others and MWD really gimps your cap. Hells
Let me liberate you of your T2 mods. T2 mods are dropping in price, because of invention?? No its because of pirates. |

This isn't exactly what you asked but....
AB skills are useful for the Rook which lacks grid to fit an MWD along with the following: 5xHML, LSB + Smartbomb.
Using an AB also means you don't suffer the cap penalty of the MWD, however you need to be on your toes all whole time as it will take you much longer to get to optimal (from close range - i.e. ontop of a gate)
With gang bonuses, rogue implants and good nav skills I can get 600m/s in my Rook. web/scram/noa range in time so that you still able to warp off if you need to.
So, yes they can be useful, but it really depends on the ship...

I would strongly recommend a MWD on a Sniping Tempest. Its got nice agility and speed, you have the slots, and it can be a lifesaver if you jump into a bubble.

For what your looking at MWD are needed but, the MWD does severely affect your sig whereas an AB doesn't. Ships like the Ishkur are often better (imo) with an AB rather then a MWD. whats the use of flying small ships if your sig makes you stand out like a BS? Though if you need to close range quickly, not caring if you take damage, you'll need a MWD.

I tend to believe MWD's are overrated. They take significant fitting and most importantly, cap. On my gang tempest i go for a T2 afterburner with fuel conservation lvl 5, and it hardly takes *any* cap and lasts 15s. While the maximum speed achieved is about 40% of that with a MWD, the extra cap allows me to run it indefinetly, and run a dual rep tank at the same time with just one injector.
