Ah yes, the US needs more liberal ghey fat ppl running around... We don't have enough of those yet!
All I can say to the OP is your points make sense.
However, most schools are run by liberal minded people. Those free thinkers who are useless out in the real world... Those who want to live in la-la land, prepare the students for la-la land, only to let them leave school with a useless education.
Looks like Canada has the same ******s running schools as the US...
Asian schools seem to do it right, hence the reason in a matter of a few decades China will rule the world...
Take a step back and realize that EVE is a piece of art and useless to you in any basic sense of the word that you can grasp. As some self-righteous amarr once phrased it 'end yourself!'
No, what we see of EVE is art, the code behind the scenes keeping 30,000 people playing simulateously is a work of software and computer engineering. CCP could replace all the nice pretty backgrounds, weapon effects and ship skins with 0 dimensional white points with labels, and EVE would still be EVE; just less "pretty".
Art is filler for games, nothing more. The true meat of the product is the code, and a good programmer/engineer will make it such that you do not notice it during normal play.
Everything that is not code in a game (ART) is way more than just filler. Its immersion, the entire experience. Code is what is there to make everything work. It is NOT the game.
I'm really surprised by the amount of EVE gamers who hate art. I can only that you all temporarily loose your eye site so you can learn first hand the value of art.

...And how again is this not useless to anyone of DarkMatters disposition?

To the OP, why would I want to know first aid and survival skills in a world without art? The problem is there being too many of your kind.

why are you wasting time arguing whether too much time is spent on art? that's grasping at straws when it comes to actually improving schools. i've only had to take three art classes in my life (public schooling in america). that's hardly anything compared to taking things like math every year. some of the stuff you learn in math you will never use unless you major in a very specific field of math.
the main problem with the schools is hardly the curriculum. there are socioeconomical problems that have to be addressed before your changes in curriculum affect anything. some schools cant afford text books for all the students, other schools can build super fancy gymnasiums. the risk of getting shot when a "Blood" pulls out a gun to shoot the "Crip" throwing "signs" to represent his sect certainly affects learning in city schools and has nothing to do with art or science.

First off, much of what one learns in High School in terms of Mathematics is very, very important in real life. The fact that you don't realise it just shows you how dependent you really are when it comes to algebra, probabilities and trigonometry. Just because you don't go to work everyday and do math problems out of a textbook does not mean you apply it subconciously. For example, the lottery to a simple minded person is free money. You pay $20 and could win $1,000,000. To someone who understands probability, you know that your $20 ticket is only one of X number of tickets, and the more tickets bought to less likely you are to win.
And to your second point, the problems of society have spilled into the classroom, it is not something that we can do to improve schools in and of themselves. Questions need to be answered, such as, does a citizen really need to own an automatic shotgun for bird hunting? Or an assault rifle for deer hunting? Dynamite for fishing? etc.

Edited by: Arron S on 20/07/2007 23:22:24 You can use math is us full for calculating your interest on car and house loans. as well as calculating your taxes and investments(if you invest your money)
Also its fun, when you know how to use math to predict prices of things by using stats. Which is how wal-mart makes so much money, ingenius data mining, sadly they don't treat their workers very nice.. also, interesting how Wal-Mart thrives in community's which don t have to many high-paying jobs, such as factory's. and are full of small business that pay minimum wage... funny how very few people put that one together.
Can't say all teachers are liberal, my Comm tech and Math teacher were always ****ed off that the arts, music and sports programs were getting all the money, were they got **** all

The basis of the anti Artsy rants here is the desire for [insert particular country] to stay on top of the rest of the world. They are so **** scared of losing there dominance, and possibly there way of life, that they resort to the simplistic rant of "lets produce more!" They equate that with Science and Math, so "noses to the grindstone boys," "the countries economy and my lifestyle are at stake, and hey if i'm a drone consumer, so should you be."

People often confuse 2 things...
Importance of art in life
Importance of art classes @ school.
Is not the same think m'kay. You don't need to pass an art class to say if something is beautiful. On the other hand, if you didn't pass calculus, good luck with that logic circuit board design (just to mention one example). I would drop art for calculus @ school at any time. |
