I've been playing for a few days and I read thru a mining guide. I'd already decided to seriously play my main as a miner yet I had a few ides/nightmares on support logistics.
Eventually, I'll reach the point where I can happily mine using the 'cannister' technique where you haul using a freighter. However this set me thinking about additional ships and being a solo player. The nightmare of moving two ships with only one character.
Now comes the question! Is it cheesy to create an alt and have both your main and alt in a two person corporation so that the alt does the muling with a freighter? Obviously a person can only run one character at a time, but I wondered if this is illegal in someway?
If it is not allowed, how in the heck does a one-person show run the two ships from A to B then on to C? I thought of shuttles but you'd need on in each system! The family corp seems a nice idea...I do hope it's legal.

People do this all the time, as far at it being "legal" according to the TOS and EULA Im not sure, dont realy see why not, but I know plenty of people wo even take this to the next step and have an different account they pay for and run 2 instances of the client at once and have both flying at once.
Also unless they have changed this and I missed something, or I am terribly misinformed about the nature of a freighter they wont be able to open the jetcan you are mining into. Industrials/blockade runners/transport ships can though

to my knowledge, this is not illegal at all. But my difficulty with the "alt" concept is that you can only train one character at a time. If you're not going to have a second account to be your hauler, I suggest you stick with the shuttle system. Shuttles are dirt cheap and, for my mind, to be considered throw-aways, especially as you begin to make more money. Soon you will make the 6k to 9k per shuttle on one cycle of your mining strips. Plus, your main character will be trained to fly the different ships you will need to move to accomodate your mining strategy. "Pop Rocker Extraordinaire" |

Industrial, not Freighter. Freighters are for hauling large quantities between stations, and cannot load from cans in space. Industrials are used for mining ops.
If you're only running one character at a time in this capacity, you're better off sticking to one character. Run back to the station, switch ships, come back for the ore.
The mining guide to which you refer.. was it "Halada's Mining Guide"? If so, then you should be in good shape.
It's not really a nightmare, as long as there aren't any ore thieves around.

The use of multiple accounts is allowed and encouraged. CCP has no problem with making more money.
As for using a freighter, you will not be able to use it to pick up from cans, only from a POS or station. But you can use a regular industrial or transport ship to move the ore to a station/POS then use the freighter to move the ore/minerals from there.

Thanks for the replies and advice guys, much appreciated!
One suggestion someone pointed out was to travel using just your pod, but only in safe space. Never thought of that one to be honest.

Actually pod travel can be used anywhere in empire. There are only a few things that could harm a pod traveler while he's avoiding autopilot: Deployed bombs, Doomsday devices, bubbles and smartbombs. Of those, all but one are restricted to 0.0 space. The use of smartbombs to kill fast aligning ships isn't widely enough applied to worry about unless you travel trough some pretty firmly established pirate nests.
The trick is that a pod aligns instantly. So as long as you pick your destination and WTZ, you'll be out of there about a second after anyone can even see your pod.

One of my neighbours in 0.0 likes to fly around in his pod. He knows what he's doing and he's extremely difficult to kill.

Actually all that's needed to kill a pod in 0.0 is a warp bubble on a stargate. When you jump in you'll be in the middle of the bubble, 13k from gate. You can't warp anywhere and if you try to move back to the gate or out of the bubble you're dead a few seconds later because you move way too slow. Logging off probably won't save you either.
This is only true for 0.0 though, in 0.1+ systems bubbles can't be used so you're safe in a pod as long as you're alert and not afk.
