Hello -- I'm getting close to acquiring my first-ever battleship, and I'm looking for some advice about model (Dominix vs Megathron) and fitting.
I've got decent gunnery and drone skills; the Domi is a better drone carrier, yes? Any other comments/discussion welcome. - Marlowe

I'm guessing the replies you are going to get are dependent on what you will be using it for. In any case, try Quickfit or Eve Fitting Tool and see if you can get all the stuff you want to use loaded.
Also, the sticky in the Ships and Modules forum can give you some fitting ideas.

Overall the Dominix seems to be the flavor of the last six months. Since drones on that ship are practically a primary weapon system rather than secondary (or tertiary) as it is on most other ships this allows for a great deal of flexibility. Megathron is a good ship too but barring its setup as a Blasterthron (one of the hardest hitting ships in the game) I think you'd find the Domi more versatile for a first battleship (cheaper too).
Of course so much of this is a matter of opinion and either is a good choice.

The character you're posting with is about 4 months old, so I'm going to assume most of your gunnery skills aren't maxed. Go with the Domi, the SP requirement to do well in it, no matter what you're doing with it, is very low. Personally, I'd hold off on flying around in a Mega or Hype till most basic gunnery support skills are 5'd and you can put T2 blasters or rails on it. Going from 4 to 5 on all those skills *really* makes a difference for the large guns.

na you don't need lvl5 to fly mega or anything. Depends what your doing really but imho picka type of flying your prefer. drones or guns. and then pick a ship.
what you want to do with it? -----

Either for PvP or PvE, I'd recommend your first BS be a Dominix.
First, its cheaper and more forgiving in case you mess up, with a better tank to compensate for your lower skills.
Might be a bit ugly though .

This is the kind of comment that really isn't that helpful in the long run. For basic utility, you do not need maxed gunnery skills, nor do you need t2 guns. If everyone waited for t2 guns to fly a Megathron no one under a year old would be in one. You're perceiving "maximum firepower" as the only acceptable option, and that's not the case. I'm surprised you didn't say wait on the Domi until you can use t2 Heavy drones or sentries.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I'll agree that the Domi is probably the better option, simply because it's going to be easier to fit than the Mega and it's got a decent tank.
A much more expensive alternative is a Hyperion which can be fit with 350mm rails, and a good tank with moderate skills and still do lvl 3's and 4's (with help) with moderate to poor gun skills.
I don't know what you're flying now, but the Myrmidon is a good alternative (better looking than the Domi) and can do lvl 3's.
If you're not doing PVE, I would say, make sure you can afford to lose it if you PVP, because everyone loses ships in PVP, even people with 5 years in game.
I would encourage you to fly ships as soon as you're able, simply because then you will appreciate the difference that additional skills will make. Just be careful because losing a battlship hurts a bit more than a frigate or a cruiser.
