Well the server and domain name are pretty useless without the source code, how about a price for people that dont have the isk for the code and want to purchase everything other then your character outright for $?

The reason we're not releasing the source code at this time is because there are 2 investments into Griefwatch that have yet to be repaid. First and foremost is the ~70b ISK that Griefwatch customers have paid to us that they'll now be losing. I understand the desire to get the service for free, but I can't just give away something that people have paid for and yet to receive. Second is the cost of the server which has not made its money back. The initial investment in the server and hosting is about $1,900.00.
Put simply, open sourcing the code dumps the investment of the only 2 groups I care about down the drain: My customers and myself.

The reason you dont make more than 30$ /month is cause you only display adsense on frontpage. Am I wrong?
If you made it mandatory to display adsense on peoples killboards you could probably make more. Make them pay a little extra isk and then they lose the ads, win win.
Rather than seeing this site die... Now... if you want someone to administrate your site while you're gone and then return later you can contact me. Free bandwidth included in exchange for percentage of the isk income of course :) I have a hosting company (IRL) with the necessary equipment to run things flawlessly. We run all kinds of community sites for real cash when its outside of EVE so we've the experience to do it.

There there, I merely meant that he invested the money well aware of that it might not work out. And afaik the server doesn't just disappear because he takes it offline for awhile.
What was invested in the killboard making is time, and if he's genuinely interested in providing a service to the EVE-community, and his customers - I think he should offer the source code to them.

Ebayers take something away from the game. Those who made Griefwatch have contributed something to it.
I would personally never buy ISK on eBay or get it from selling GTC's, because it would make my playing experience feel hollow and worthless. With paying my Griefwatch rent however, I have no moral dilemma whatsoever.
Here's to hoping that someone is able to take over and keep Griefwatch running. And best of luck with your RL issues Mr. Coolness!!

Sorry to hear you are no longer able to run the griefwatch service. I hope a way can be found to keep it going, it's a great resource for the EVE community.
I'm interested in some aspects of the sale. You seem to be starting from the premise that your users need to be refunded for pre-paid service they won't receive. How about stipulating that the buyer must continue to provide that service at no additional cost? The purchase of a real life business as a going concern frequently involves transfer of both assets and obligations.
On the subject of obligations, what are the server hosting arrangements? Does the buyer take on a co-location contract too, and at what cost? Where is the server currently physically located and does the price include shipping it to some place else?
What language is the software written in? That's an important consideration for anyone taking over its care and feeding...
Thanks
Dal. |

Damn shame, Griefwatch was an awesome killboard (and the reason I dropped mine). Very sad to see it go, I'd be happy to take it over but I think I may take water over my head and a price larger than what I can manage, I do wish you the best of luck and hope to see someone give it a new home.
If you ever do release the code package in a more (to me) suitable way, I'd do what I can to lay my hands on it.

The server should absolutely pay for itself. I believe he mentioned his add pack was out of date.
