I always wondered why you couldnt manage your skills through the "My Character" page...it seems the functionality already exists to interface the website's XML with your character database on the server. Why is it that you have to log into the actual game to set a new skill training?
I cant see any reason why you shouldnt be able to set a new skill through the website. If all you want to do is make sure you keep training, then logging into the game seems to be an unneccesary load on the server. Plus, if you're not at home, you'd have to download the client, and if you're at work or school that might not be exactly smiled upon :)
The only reason I can think of why not is that you could have programs that automatically do it for you. But that's circumvented easily enough just by having one of those jumbly codes you have to copy, just like when you create trial accounts.
I know its not that big a deal to log in, but it wouldnt be that big a deal I wouldnt think to implement this functionality either.

It gets suggested at least twice a week. If you do a search you will find the longer answer. The short answer is that the devs that people to log in, also it stops people some writing a tool to manage there training on there behalf.

It's easy to export a bit of data and convert it to xml for a website. It's quite something else to have an actual interface with 2-way traffic.
One reason I could think of is that it provides a point of entry to the main database other then using the client. And browsers aren't really the most secure programs around.
And the argument of not being at home is silly. I assume you sleep ~8 hours a day too? Skills finish during that time too.
It would be convenient to be able to change skills from the website but the majority of players can manage just fine with a little planning. The only people who need this are people sent out on a deployment. Then again, if they were playing any other MMO their character would just remain the same for the duration, why should Eve be different.

Fair enough, I thought it was a technical rather than a gameplay issue. And for those who are deployed/out of town/etc for long times, to answer your question, Eve should be different because Eve is the only game where you cant raise your skill by playing the game, but only by waiting. So your options are either to train up a long skill that will cover the time you're gone (which you may not necessarily need as much as other skills) or train a shorter skill and let the rest of the time go to waste...
