I am happy to announce the introduction of SkillWatch - a Windows Vista Sidebar Gadget!
It is designed to monitor your character's currently training skill and ISK balance. You can run multiple instances to monitor multiple characters on multiple accounts. It also has three links on the flyout that you can edit to link to your killboard, forums, or whatever you wish.
This gadget uses the Limited Access API Key available at http://myeve.eve-online.com/api/default.asp so the information it has access to is limited for security reasons. Also, because this is a Sidebar Gadget all of it's source code is viewable - nothing is hidden. It is written in javascript with supporting .html and .css files. All of the files are visible in %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\EveOnline.gadget.
It was developed by an experienced Vista Sidebar Gadget Developer, Law James with information, advice, suggestions, and very minor coding assistance from myself. Skins were provided by SFKilla a talented artist and also a Gadget Developer. Neither Law James or SFKilla are Eve Online players, so if you want to discuss this in game, report problems or make suggestions you can evemail me or vist the channel SkillWatch. You can also contact Law James via a link on his web page.
The gadget is hosted on the Windows Live Gallery. You can download it here.

The artist responsible for the current skins is working on some new "Eve Themed" skins already. It might take a while but when the changes are made the gadget will prompt you to download the new version.

Even though EVEmon display nicely in the tray this is very good and easy to be updated of my chars. How often does it update the info? Every restart or every hour kinda?

The current version queries the XML when it's started up, when the skill is finished, when it is double-clicked, and every hour. As there is no real reason for it to update every hour, expecially when a very long skill is training, I've been asked by a representative of CCP to make it automatically update less often. I will probably make it query the XML every 24 hours when the skill in training has longer than a couple days to go and every six hours when it is less than that.
Of course, if you've changed your skill in game, or just want to see your updated ISK balance, you can double click the gadget to make it update.

Nice looking gadget! Nice work.
About the updates. The skill training XML provides a cache timeout value (the cachedUntil element near the end of the XML), which is the next time the API gets an update from actual game data. I'm sure if you updated in step with that value, CCP would have no qualms with update frequency. And you'd still be able to see a skill/wallet change as soon as CCP provides it.

It is a real pity that I don't use the sidebar... hell, I might go back to using it.
Being a Fleet Commander and a Arbitrator pilot are the same thing - The only difference being that the Fleet Commander commands other people, and the people actually listen to him. |

lol, I also went back to using it. I've had sidebar disabled pretty much since the first day I installed vista. But I'm liking this...no more missed skill training due to my forgetfulness. ;D

This is great, unlike others you can set your desktop up, with very little hassle to be able to check the skill countdown... without moving your mouse.
Which is a good thing if you're otherwise... busy.

I've heard of people installing the Vista Sidebar on XP but that is probably more trouble than it is worth. You might want to take a look at this instead:

Oh wow, this is so extremely, extremely cool and usefull.. I just started even on friday and was very happy eve will continue to run even when minimized so you can check your mail and stuff. But having the important info right there on your sidebar is way cool!!! Great compliments to the developer!! :)

The XML that this gets from CCP is 'cached' for 15 minutes from the time it's requested. So if you have a skill finish (or change a skill) and you've just started up the gadget (or it has automatically updated - which it currently does every hour) then it can not see the new skill until 15 minutes have passed from the last update.
There is no way around this.
One change that is currently being considered and debated is to disable the 'once an hour' XML update. This would allow the gadget to always be able to update manually... You can do this by double clicking on the gadget. This would also reduce unnecessary stress on CCP's servers. After all, if you change a skill in game you'll know you did so and can manually update the gadget yourself. The 15 minute limit is still in effect, of course... That's as often as it can possibly update, even manually.

EveWatch has been updated to v1.1, now including my skins for some extra Bling!
Great job on Law James for the gadget. I recommend you check out his other gadgets if your on Vista, Top Notch.
If you currently have EveWatch it should ask to download the update when you restart your sidebar.
There is also my Flyout and Gadget skin in this release (fitting the Eve style).

Great gadget but I have a request. Could you make an option so you can leave the character window with website links open all the time? Right now it only shows when you click on it and disappears when you click something else.
I replaced the windows shell with a semi custom Eve interface and your gadget looks great when open.

I`m sorry,
I`ve tried everything, Vista 32, 64 bit, turning off the firewall, but I just can`t get the eve gadget to authenticate the API.
The error message just keeps saying Authentication Failure.
Also, is there any way to cut / paste that number into the gadget?

Sure... On this webpage: http://myeve.eve-online.com/api/default.asp just doubleclick on the user ID (not the title, just the number after the : and space) and then hit ctrl-c... Go to the gadget's settings page put the cursor in the User ID box and then hit ctrl-v. Then go back to the API page and doubleclick on the long string of characters and numbers after "API Key: " and again hit ctrl-c. Then go back to the settings page on the gadget, place the cursor in the box under "Limited Access API Key" and hit ctrl-v.
That's how to 'cut and paste' the User ID and API Key from the webpage into the gadget. Doubleclicking should have the effect of highlighting the whole User ID and then the API key.
After you have both the User ID and the API Key in those boxes hit the blue arrow key just to the right of the "Limited Access API Key" box. This should load the characters on your account and allow you to choose a character from the "Pick a Character" dropdown.
I hope this works for you. I've not heard of anyone else having any problems like this. The gadget works under both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista and making changes to Vista's built-in firewall (Windows Defender) is not required.

No, it doesn't remember your information if you close it. It will remember thru a reboot, however, or if you stop and restart the sidebar. This is common to all sidebar gadgets.
You can monitor different accounts by running the gadget multiple times. Just add it a 2nd time and put the 2nd accounts info in.

Did this, and now I have two versions of it listed under Gadgets. 
By re-installing each seperately, I was able to see which was the old and the new one, using the "About" button.
Deleted the old one manually.
Not sure if this is a bug or not (having a whole new Gadget downloaded, instead of earlier one updating to new one). Just figured I'd mention it.

This sometimes happens. From what I understand it is because of how the sidebar works, not the gadget. There is an easier way to see which is the old version, however. In the "Gadget Gallery" you can select "Show Details" and then uninstall the one with the lower version number.

Could it be possible to change it to not say that there is an error whenever there is no connection? I am frequently in places with my laptop that I dont have a connection, and would like a way to see what my skill is doing when I am there - evemon is nice, but it is not sitting at me on my desktop :)
So... is it possible to not have it say error?

Would be nice to see the end time for the local time zone. I tend to try and time skills so it ends at specific times (ie when I get up for work, or when i get home from work) Any way you can add the end date?

The file SkillTrainingComplete.wav is missing from the current and previous version. I have let Law James know about this so he can include the file and update the gadget but he has not found time for this, yet. In the meantime you can download this file from here: SkillTrainingCompleted.wav and just put the file in the gadget's directory. Usually this is: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\EveOnline.gadget
Some of the other suggestions are also being looked at.

I've just noticed that if your local time changes due to daylight savings time and you have a skill due to finish after that change then the time the gadget shows will be one hour off. Once the local time actually changes you can refresh the skill (doubleclick on gadget) and it will show the right time.

The gadget needs no patch, it's ccp that needs to push the turn-on button of the eve api server :)
Sorry guys eve api is down, this affects all tools using it.

The problems with the gadget were actually caused by CCP having the API offline for a while after the patch, yesterday. It's back up and working, now.
There will be a new version, soon, with the new skills added but there are some other changes coming to the API in the next week or so. I will wait for these changes before I get with Law to work on the next version. In the meantime, if you are training a new skill it will display as 'unknown skill'.

There has been another update, recently. v1.4 brings with it a couple of changes.
* The flyout displays the skill end date in local time.
* The flyout displays total skillpoints.
Hope it continues to work well for everyone!

A little bug: when characters doesn't train any skill gadget shows "No skil in training". Only one L in word "skill".

I just wanted to say thanks for this gadget, I think its amazing.
I have one question though, how do I get my portrait to show in the gadget? Everything else works, but i have a big ! for a picture.
Im running x64 Vista Ultimate if that helps.

I really like this one with my Vista64 and sent Law a few GBP.
At first I had problems getting any API data on my second account, but the solution was to go to the forums and log out, checking "log in a different user next time".
Because going to account management for the second account and then straight to the API page did not work.

The picture comes from the same source as your picture in the forums - ccp's servers. So if your image is not showing in the fourms then it will not show in Skillwatch, either... Skillwatch does NOT get the image locally off of your machine. CCP's servers should update, eventually, and once your picture shows on the forums it will also show in skillwatch.

The API feeds are down at the moment and, therefore, Skillwatch will not function until CCP gets that back on-line.
I've heard it will likely take a couple of days...
No patch to Skillwatch is required; It will start working when the API starts working.
