I have read both scanning guides here http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=431586 and here http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=445716&page=1
and still have some questions. 2 days ago I went to Dodixie to have some scan practice. I warped between planets until I got 5 au to ships (and drones). I dropped only one snoop probe to have a result. I warped to accel gate and found inside 2 BS.. Ok. Managed to provoke one of them and killed it. Then I made another attempt to find someone else. And again, only 1 attempt with snoop and I'm near accel gate with roids and mining gang here... "Cool" was my first thought and I went sleep after having some fun with miners.
But yesterday... I spent nearly 5 hours and could not find anything! I wasted nearly 50 snoops and 20-30 fathoms. And all what I found were only lone drones hanging in space. How is it possible??? OK, no whine here, just questions:
1. If I get closer than 4 au to the target, can I use Quest probe to scan for ship and drones? (need to switch launcher on ship) 2. Do drones have racial signals or not? (like radar for amarr, magnetometric for gallente etc.) 3. If my first scan failed, should I destroy probe and deploy new one, or I can use existing one and the chances to find something will be the same?

Some quick answers:
1. Your initial success was pure luck.
2. Your second experience with you probing for 5 hours and finding nothing is much more typical.
3. Yes, you can use quest probes, and yes, they are far more effective.
4. Drones are easier to find with racial probes of the same race.
5. Don't destroy each probe. Use it until it expires, unless you have moved closer and dropped a new probe. *Do* destroy any probes that are not currently contributing to scanning the current target area.

Good advice on the whole but I thought I'd comment on these two points.
Drones have all sensor types so it doesn't matter which type of quest probe you use.
I like to destroy a probe the second I no longer need it. If I get a result, before I even warp to the result I destroy the probe. If your target is paranoid and scans for probes every so often, the less time your probe spends in space the better.

About the quest probes, YES you can use them when you are within 4 AU, and you should. I always fly with both a recon and a scan launcher (one of them in cargo ofc) and probes of all types. I rarely need to use two scans to find my targets.

Thanks to murder one for useful input.

You need big luck to find mission runner in one scan. Signals from deadspace are 100 times weaker.

I'll put it this way: I don't even *bother* to drop a probe -at all- until I'm at least inside of 400m km of the target, and that's only if the target is a battleship (anything smallers is *much* harder to probe out). Range to the target has a huge effect on your chances to find your target.
Being barely within the 4au or 5au maxiumum for your probe type won't cut it. I'd recommend being inside half that range as a good rule. And skill up your probe strength skill as much as possible (I have mine at 5) and get a PPG-2 implant as well (+5% scan strength). Every little bit helps.
Additionally, probing for anything smaller than a BS is exponentially more difficult. And if it's something like a HAC or Command Ship or heaven forbid a Recon, it'll be virtually impossible to probe out, even if you're right on top of them.
Anyway, just some hard won experience on my part. Hope you do well with your probing. Let me know how it goes.

While you probably have more experience probing than I do, it never seems that hard when I do it, i can only think of one or two instances where I simply could not get a hit on a ship at all. Usually missions are not really a problem and I hit them nearly every time, (with the recon probes not exploration probes) the other day for instance (and zkillz can verify) I found a Rattlesnake in a mission, using hte whole system, one point sensor strength, Obervator probes.
So either I'm really lucky or M1 is really unlucky or maybe theres some other reason, all I know is I use the recon probes most often (for speed) and I get nearly everything I set out to find. But good luck to the OP in his probing escapades.

Well, TBH I'm usually after targets that are -extremely- paranoid (rightly so heheh), and I generally only get the *smallest* of margins time wise to get my probe dropped, get the target found, and warp in a ship to tackle it.
I need to get the ship found on the first try, or the second at the very least, as any probe sitting out in space for more than a few minutes means that *everyone* in the entire system docks up, regardless of what they are doing, and local ends up with line after line of "OMG! PROBES!! OMGOMG! DOCK DOCK! LAMER PIRATES! DOCK!".
It really is that bad.
But if you can afford to spend half an hour to find a target, by all means, ignore my minimums and you'll generally find something after a while. If I have no other recourse (the mission is *waaaaaaayyyy* out there), I'll use 5au or 10au probes if I have nothing better to do, but my success rate at that point is around 1% or so.
I do it more to annoy the mission runners at that point than to have any real hope of finding someone.

Gotta agree with Murder One here. Chances of finding a mission runner with recon probes makes it close to a waste of time, unless there are many ships inside the same mish ( drones included ). If you're lucky enough to get a bookmark within Quest range it's bingolingo \o/.
