hey ive been in the game for comming up to a year, i play Caldari got a drake set up for passive and all my missile skills are at 5 except maybe 3 of them which are at 4 (training them to 5, 2 of em are gonna take 24 days -_-) i got a full t2 setup except the HM launchers because i dont have the powergrid or CPU for them but nearly all thru the game i always end up in some mining corp which is boring, infact its beyond boring to the point where nothing can describe the mind numbing repetitiveness of it
anyway have ya got any tips for a newbie? never tried pvpin, never even visited below 0.5 i have 0 clue on what to do, ive looked at ship setups and im still hesitant to give it a go
would i be better in say a BS? a frig? a cruiser? or is the drake sound
would i be better abandoning all missile skills and training hybrid up?
would i be better just training for a new empire ship altogether (from what ive been reading, caldari are a mess in pvp)
anyway cheers for any tips in advance

Get into frigates, cheap and can be decently fitted to give you a fighting chance. Get used to losing them, you will lose a lot of them but they are fun to fly. IMO train for Rifter or Punisher, very good lowsec frigates which can pack quite a punch. Not sure how the kessie stacks up to them in terms of PvP but then I've never lost a Rifter to one. Caracal as a cruiser is decent but will get eaten by a decently flown Rupture or drone boat.
Just get out there and push the button, learning to PvP and Pirate is all about doing it, no amount of theory crafting can help I'm afraid

They are a mess in solo-PVP. In solo you need mwd, webber and scrambler (at least) which cripples your tank. You can still use the drake for simply ganking little targets, though, so drake isn't that bad after all, just run if you see one of the better hacs or the other BCs.
Or gang up with some mates :)

You'd be better not flying caldari.
If you seriously have to, alone.. try a Hawk if your missile based.. Cerb if you can fly them.. hell a crow is nice.
Eagle if your hybrids are decent, rokh is ok for gangs.
Everythign else? dont fly it.
Go Minmatar for solo pvp tbfh. =

Edited by: Vizranuh on 24/07/2007 15:53:52 Continued, i'd agree that you should fly frigs until you're comfortable with pvping and then move on to t1 cruisers, and so on. Also, something I didn't see anyone mention is, you're going to want to learn how to use your scanner. You should be able to warp into a system and find local player locations fairly quickly without just warping belt to belt blindly.
Good luck with your game.

train gallente ships and hybrids or drones. then fly(gunship/droneship) incursus > thorax/vexor > brutix/myr > megathron/dominix
caldari suck at pvp and while your drake might not die as often as my myr, you wont get any kills.

Assuming you need a big bad ship to pirate is a misconception. (does my sentence make sense ?)
If you want to pirate best way to start is by using frigates and cruisers, being able to use stasis webifiers , warp scramblers / disruptors, nosferatu maybe. Also for frigates some electronics and engineering is nice and a little bit of gunnery couple with some nice navigation skills (from a newby point of view mind you).
So you're set, got a nice bleeder punisher, a ready for fast action rifter , etc. all you need is to get the hang of it. Best way to start is by killing another newby pilot, or more newby pilots, by any means you can (ore flipping, "free loot" can , etc.) And then make some rounds of low sec space where people are more alert, most of the time less newby and a bit more skilled.
If you like it, try looking up some pirate corporations and do not be picky about the location as many pirates move a lot, from region to region so even if you find a corp in your area you might find out they plan to move to the nearby region in a month and to south or north in the future and then come back and so on.
Also you could contact me in game for corp info :P we're recruiting. hehehe
Good luck to you.

I agree. I got started in a Punisher which costs a total of around $400k to buy and fully fit. It was a good situation for me because it got me used to engaging in combat and didnt break the bank in the process. Beyond that just upgrade your ships based on your income and you'll be in great shape.

Yea, start in Frigates, for the time you've been in the game getting ISK to replace them shouldn't be an issue, you're looking at 400-700k for a pretty good T1 fitting, you could go crazy and stick T2 stuff in there but it's not really worth it.
Sorry to hijack the thread, thought my questions might be ones you have yourself, when it comes to MWD or AB which do you guys prefer? Wouldn't an AB be better due to MWD increasing your sig radius pretty significantly?
Also for a pirating Rifter what is the general setup for the low slots?

for speed tanking: if your MWD pushes you faster than 7km/s then it is worth it
for getting away: MWD wont get you out of scram range fast enough in a slowboater, especially if he has you webbed, and your blown up sig radius simply helps him destroy you faster before you can get out of range of his web/scram.
I say use the med slot for another tanking module. The Diabolic Abstraction |

Drakes imo are one of the best ships to pirate in. Best tank in the game given some skills, you have to have some pretty great combat skills to be able to break drake tank :P Its annoying because the only pirates I've seen in the last week have been drakes lol...

Myrmidon 4tw. BC5 with max drone skills, and max gunnery = devastating. You have about the same DPS as most decent bs's with a slightly lesser tank. You just have to watch out for people shooting your drones. My ishtar used to be my favorite ship, but after rev 2, the myrm has my vote hands down. 32m for the ship, 15m for fittings, maybe 20m for rigs (if you're building them urself, more if you buy them on the market), and another few mil for insurance and you're good to go. Ishtar will run you 105m by itself with no real insurance option and you'll have to faction fit it to get all the modules on it.
The drake on the other hand is a fine ship, but definately not for solo PvP/Piracy. I'd join a pirate corp first and learn from them before going full throttle -10 pirate. Piracy is not for everyone. It takes a lot of persistence, determination, and experience to be good at it. You can get by on brute force for so long, before a bigger fish comes along and eats your bait.

Maybe on gates for killing industrials. If it wants to have tank you talk about it doesnt have web and speed mod. It does low dmg meaning it might very well run dry from running scram and being mildly nossed before killing equal target, talking about passive tank. But worst of all my so far experiences is being in gang with passive drake. I HATE them. It's like having "primary" written across your forehead ffs. But yes, their tanks are irritating.
Train Gallente or Minmatar as some suggested. Even t1 cruisers rock with those races, you can easily solo with them and usually win easily against same sized opponents.
On the other hand if you end up ganging you might consider Blackbird. Unbelievably useful ship for it's cost.

If you've never tried PvP, you may want to take Agony's PVP Basic class. Next class is August 5th. Head over to the link in my sig and sign up on the forums if you are interested.
Agony pilots don't pirate in lowsec, but many of the things you learn in the class will apply.
As for ships, you will lose many as you learn. Popular frigates are Rifters and Punishers, use eve-search.com or scrapheap challenge and look up the "bleeder punisher" setup. It can take almost any ship including some battlecruisers. Once you lose 10-20 frigates, you will probably have the hang of things, and can move onto cruisers such as Stabbers or Thoraxes. Autocannons or Blasters are the way to go for lots of damage (and is why Caldari aren't recommended). If you want to do gate-piracy, then tanking battlecruisers shine, although you probably want friends to help.
Minmatar and Gallente are the popular races for PvP. Caldari are possible, but it is an uphill battle. Being Caldari, you probably have some Hybrid skills, so a switch to Gallente should be easier, all you need is drone skills. --- PvP Training: www.agony-unleashed.com "Veni, Vidi, Caedi" |

As it was said, caldari sucks when it comes to solo...
If you wanna gain some experience first and have decent missile skills, fit up some caracal and go playin. Ship sucks, but a decent fitting (decent fitting does not mean expensive either) and some skills can get you out of many fights.
Think outside the box, and have fun

All races have there roles in PVP, that being said all races are equally good in pvp if you use them for their specefic role.
The best way to get in the killing of things would be to join a pirate corp/merc corp/a plain pvp corp.
Frigs are cheaper and at the beginning you will lose more then you kill, so use expensive ships at your discretion.
I would stick with the drake, it has a good tank i would use either ECM drones or light rep drones for support, it has low DPS so youll need support for bigger kills.
When you outfit a ship, outfit it for a purpose IE:tanking, tackling,DPS and so on. Like the above says, i wouldent outfit for tanking and tackling {on caldari ships} especially with a passive Drake impossible.
So fill in the role that suits your skills and ship best and by all means HAVE FUN Hells
Let me liberate you of your T2 mods. T2 mods are dropping in price, because of invention?? No its because of pirates. |
