I think most people who ever played City of Heroes will tell you the best part of the game was the level of detail you could put into you character. The reason they could get away with that, is in the game you did not get standard loot like a breastplate, or gauntlets.. in the standard mmos you get your character to look as close to what you want by raiding for whatever set of items looks the way you want. And even then it's not that great. In CoH you got the option to detail and configure your character how you wanted, and that is how he/she looked in game for the rest of the time.
In EVE we really have the same opportunity. Ships are not going to change the way they look because of what you have fitted. So if given the chance we could customize it to excatly how we want, and that's how it will be until it blows up.
This also provides the CCP with an option to add a money sink. Everytime you access the station you would pick something like what you do when you are going to insure your ship. Have it cost X amount to enter that mode/screen where you can start to customize your ship. Also if you want you can make the LP store sell paint colors, textures, stencil designs and more. You could add an degree of even shaping the hull of the ship if so inclined. There are just tons of options you could open up. We would really only be limited by the imagination of whoever implements this.
Another good aspect of this idea is that players could really add ideas to further help change the level of customization. With suggestions for better options and camera angles, and other unforeseen advice to better ths feature. Unlike issues like pvp balance or farming or whatever there would be no agenda to change the game better for themselves that would adversely effect the other players. Well other than the need for sunglasses when someone flys by in their neon pink cargo ship.
Lastly this opens another profession type into the game. Someone buys blank ship for X amount, spends Y amount customizing it and makes the ship look amazing then can put it up for sale and make a profit. Being someone who could not color their way out of a wet paper bag, I would probably buy my ship from one of these people. I really think this is an untapped aspect of the game that could add endless hours of content, and really even help market the game when screenshot of an especially well customized ship start to circulate.

Too bad CoH/CoV was the most boring game ever played.
I would rather have attention given to mechanics and free styled PvP than custom looks.
If they could do it with the game suffering in performance great! But, in the end which is really more important?

Indeed...I think that with the graphics update we MAY be able to have custom paint schemes (relatively little data) but don't hold out for Fuzzy Dice and skull spraypaint. ------------ ULTIMATE LAG SOLUTION IBTL! IBDS/DC! IBTC! 1st in a BoB post! And other such forum tom-foolery. |

It'd be really nice to customize your ship's look, I agree, but the problem is that a lot of the time, the only thing helping to differentiate a ship from the other ships that use the same hull is the colour. I know the overview tells you when you're looking at a Pilgrim as opposed to a Curse, but sometimes it's easier to just grab a visual identifier.
There's also that and the concern of the bandwidth requirements - if you allow the appearance of, say, a Thorax to be customized in six different ways, then the info for that thorax's appearance then needs to be transmitted alongside the usual vector and activity data - increasing the amount of information, increasing the lag.
It'd be nice. But it'd also be impractical, I fear. ***

There sure have been another surge of these "customize" threads recently. Must be that time of year again
But anyway, I usually say pretty much exactly what the above poster said. So I won't bother typing it all out again.

You could make all the customization just be client side for starters. We spend alot of time looking at our own ship....and at least for me almost no time looking at anyone elses anyway.

Edited by: Ryum852 on 25/07/2007 19:09:59 or play a game with the expectation that the servers won't have major performance changes due to small changes...
with just the graphics change I don't see how it would cause lag... or are we in for an unending lag fest when the new ship graphics are live, til they revert back to what we have now?

i personally like the fact that we cant customize the ship with colors and stuff.
for starters, it means that i dont have to run into the pink kestrel 'hello kitty' version. Or Eris' pink Moros/Thanathos/Nyx/Erebus.
there was a picture posted on one of the dev blogs showing an auguror under the new gfx engine sporting an RA alliance tag. That i wouldnt mind but full blown 'omg my geddon is peeeeennn***k' is not needed here.

Even if they could do it. It would take mere moments for it to be annoying. I don't want to see purple and green, teal and orange, or something equally as annoying.
If you want really annoying customization, that will likely hurt your head, just visit random Myspace pages.
