Necro is finding a forum thread from several weeks/months/years ago and posting in it without adding anything of significance, or when the subject is no longer relevant. Generally. ------------ ULTIMATE LAG SOLUTION IBTL! IBDS/DC! IBTC! 1st in a BoB post! And other such forum tom-foolery. |

However, for some stupid reason, the RELEVANCE of the subject is usually not even taken into consideration when claiming "thread necromancy", and simply only the "old thread" rule is used instead.

someone should bookmark this thread and reply to it one year from now "to the day". Just to use it as an example. ______________________

The term "Necro" or better expressed as "thread necromancy", refers to the bumping of old threads (ranging from a few weeks to a few years) to the top of a particular forum (and thus reactivating the thread). This behaviour can lead to frustration and confusion amongst forum users, as information which is no longer relevant is bumped back up, leading to the belief that it is still up-to-date or relevant. It is quite common for players not to notice that they are in fact replying to an old thread. For this reason, threads which are classified as "necro" are generally locked to prevent such confusion from occuring. Thread "necroing" is not permitted. Threads which are still relevant to the discussion at hand are generally not locked. Should you discover a thread where this is not the case and you believe it to still be relevant for further discussion, please contact the moderator team at [email protected] and we will review the situation.
To those disussing moderation on the forums - please, don't do it, you should know better. Email [email protected] if you have any questions.

I realize there is a certain irony in this questions but I've never actually seen it answered:
My are we not allowed to discuss moderation? Would it not be required to preserve people's respect for the board's as a neutral source of information? Would that not be considered a worth-while pursuit given certain perceptions?

Because if you openly discuss moderation, then the mod may have to mention certain things that are private to you. It is like airing your dirty laundry in public if you know what I mean
The mods are kind enough to discuss moderation if you email them Trust me on this, I have been temp banned a few times
It is far better that it is done in private.

I believe the OP was reacting to the locking of the " CCP: Why is a Log-on Trap not an Exploit? " thread. Yeah, that thread is still relevant... logon traps are not considered an exploit, yet still many people consider it as a good candidate.
Actually, MOST necros are caused by the way the "EVE search" function is implemented... just try it yourself, more often than not, when you search for something, really OLD threads will pop up first. While some of the "necros" made that way are usually less relevant nowadays, and due to the time passed some of the conditions that caused the original thread have been changed, MOST necros ARE relevant.
Yet it is still quaint to close them down because "well, why don't you start a new thread about it" or "there are newer threads discussing this issue". Frankly, this is kind of annoying... we should try to limit the number of threads discussing an issue to a minimum (even in the threads get really long), and OLD threads should have precedence over new ones, not the other way around.

Basicly, if a thread has not had a new post in the past month: post with caution. If the thread has not had a post in the past three months: start a new thread and link to the old thread.
I would like to see them add a filter that simply prevents people from posting into a thread where the previous post (not the original post) is more than 6 weeks old. No more necro'ing problems.

This has served it's purpose and from the amount of off topic replies I see that there is not futher need for this anymore.
Master Jacques covered it pretty good and the reasoning behind "Don't discuss moderation" is that moderating a players content and/or signature is between him and the moderation team. If you have questions or complaints your are ALWAYS welcome to write to [email protected] and inquire why something was done.

Haradgrim,
I didn't say we don't allow discussion of moderation in general, I said we just don't allow it on the forums. If you have a question/concern/comment/suggestion, please email [email protected] and you will receive an answer from us.
Lastly, we don't ban people for no reason. We are required to stick to strict code of forum rules and have a 10 strike warning/ban system which you can read more about here. In addition, only lead forum moderators are permitted to issue bans.
