Edited by: hemorrhage on 24/07/2007 19:04:30 I just started this game yesterday and I want to kill stuff in 0.0 and pirate...
But seriously, all the info in this game seems a little overwhelming at first. I am planning on being a fighter type in the long run and was wondering what a good first ship would be?
I was looking at the Merlin, does this offer any real advantage over a well fitted rookie ship? I am patient and can bide my time while doing missions, hording isk and flying around with my pea shooter.
Also, at what point does everything start to come together and make more sense in this game? Weeks? Months?
Thanks for any help.

Yes, the merlin (or anything for that matter) is a HUGE improvement over your rookie ship. I would also suggest joining a corporation, in a corporation people will help show you the ropes and you'll have a set group of people to play with. To look for one hit the recruitment section of the forum here or you can check out the recruitment channel ingame, (though the recruitment forum usually gets better results).

Seriously,
The thing you'll need more than anything else is a strong sense of determination. If you just started yesterday you should understand that everyone - repeat everyone - has more skillpoints / experience than you.
You will blow up a lot. Merlin or no.
So, get a good frig. Anything bigger and it'll be too expensive for you to lose continuously. And start shooting. When you blow up ask for pointers. Most people will see your Eve birthday and help you out.
After a few weeks you'll be recruit material. And maybe you'll have a few kills. Join a good pirate corp and you're on your way.
Good luck.

imho u should to 2 things.
1) train for some weeks all foundamental skills ( learning/enginnering/electronics/ cap skills )
2) during this time do some missions with an agent to learn at least how to shot, fita ship ( learn the purpouses of modules ), travel.
3) buy better frigate and modules, but never spend all your money.
4) After pair of weeks ( trial time) u whould have a lot more info and many questions u have u could answer it by yourself. Dont think we dont want reply, but if it's your first day any answer will cause 10 more questions...
U told that u are patient.. then why u will know all the first day? take it easy.. u are even ( i hope ) not paiyng . just make experiments. and after the trial period u can even ..
*hem*
... "retry" ?? ( Telling more would not be correct, i hope u are intelligent enough to get what i mean ).
p.s) Eve is a bit complicated the first time.. u need a bit to enjoy, but if u are patirnt enough to get a clue u will realy appreciate this game.. Welcome onboard.

Thanks for the info.
Dimitros/Heelay - I agree with you, I personally do like to try and figure stuff out on my own. I feel it gives me a much better understanding in the end.
When I said I want to pirate in 0.0 after my first day I was just kidding. I know I will be on the bottom of the food chain for a while.
I posted my original question because I didn't know how much of an upgrade a new ship would be. I picked up a Punisher and some better guns last night and the difference was amazing. I did actually spend all of my money doing so, but earned 1/3 of it back in short order with the better ship.
Thanks again for the advice.

If you want to get ontop of things early - you need to pick a race and stick to it - merlin is caldari, punisher is amarr. So stick with the punisher imo (better frigate than the merlin) and go for a 'crusader' (interceptor) as thats a very strong small fighter that may suit you.
hope that helped. Also get 2 small guns (dual light pulse laser II on the market)

Rule #1: Never fly what you cannot afford to lose. For me, this means that I can buy another ship just like it, including insurance and modules. Rule #1A: When you buy a ship, assume that it is going to get blown up the instant that you undock. i.e. Don't get attached to it and make sure you can replace it.

Just make sure you get your learning skills to 4's or 5's before you do much of anything else.

I'm a little over a month into the game myself and found Evemon to be a great help
http://evemon.battleclinic.com/
It has all the items, ships, and skills in it and is alot easier than browsing the market and it gives you an idea of how long it will take for you to get into something.

Edited by: Ilyna on 25/07/2007 16:59:22 Edited by: Ilyna on 25/07/2007 16:57:41 If you want to PvP pretty much exclusively I recommend starting out in a Rifter (Minmatar) or Punisher (Amarr) two very solid PvP frigates and it's possible with these ships to take down much larger targets, when traveling through lowsec/0.0 in a Frig only a bubble (0.0 only) has a chance to catching you to be honest.
It's advised that you go get all 4 Basic Learning skills to 4, then Advanced to 4, and I think Basic to 5 and that should be fine. I think that's a months worth of training, where your char isn't really getting any better, personally I suggest you mix in other skills during this time, for PvP you need to be able to use Warp Scramblers/Stasis Webifier/Microwarp Drives so learn those inbetween. Make sure you rename your ship something, leaving it as <name>'s Rifter isn't the best idea.
I seriously recommend you join a good, newb friendly corp (Eve-University seems a good one), as you're understanding of the game will increase so much when you're able to talk to others, also use Rookie Help/Chat for any question you have, someone usually answers pretty fast.
The best way to learn to PvP is to just go out there and do it, make mistakes while you're flying ships that cost 500k and not millions. And also, you're going to do something stupid, learn from every mistake so you don't make it again. 0.0 is a very harsh place, especially the first few systems in from hi/low sec and you should join a corp before you enter.

I waited a couple of months to get my advanced learning skills to 4, because if I would have done that from the get-go I would have quit the game out of sheer boredom. If you really want to train them up, train PvP skills while you're logged in and learning skills while you're sleeping. If you aren't sleeping or logged in, this game is not for you -----------

Yeah, month 1 is about having fun and figuring out what you want to do. If you like Eve and plan to stick around, month 2 is about learning skills.
At least that's what I did.
Also, as someone mentioned earlier, pick one race and stick with it for a while. Right or wrong you'll get much further much faster than if you skip around. Switching races doesn't just slow down how quickly you get into better ships, it can actually double the time it takes to get decent gunnery and support skills.

Go to the ship setups index in "Ships and Modules"in the Forums, and look up Frigates. I've had a couple of Merlins that got lost on missions, but the Amarr Punisher with the bleeder setup is almost invulnerable. If you're Caldari, and Merlin floats your boat, I suggest tanking (emphasizing exclusively) the shields, a shield expander II will almost double your shields. Going into 0.0 space this early in the game is very risky, as experience is far more important than equipment. There are far more seasoned players than I, and I learn something every day. Good luck and hang in there, the game was made to be complex and slow when starting. You can use the forums as a google, just put in key words in search and you'll get sage advice and very good information.

Edited by: Jonny Magellan on 25/07/2007 23:36:15 You can get plenty of kills even if you re a noob. Seeing you picked Caldari either Kestrel or Merlin are plenty good. The cormorant is good but more expansive to lose. Dont forget to train learning skills, I usually altearnate between one learning skill to a "fun" skill repeat until you get IV on most and get the upper lvl learning stuff.
As a frig you would find more pvp as a pirate. I didnt go pirate but I am kinda pondering about it now. You can ransom miners, ransom haulers(only on 0.0, sentries would kill you in low sec), kill other frigs and maybe some interceptors or ratting cruisers.
