I filed a petition today and had to search on my name to do it. So I found this character named Jim McGregors4 that is 2 month old and in a npc corp.
Is it me or does it seem likely that someone will try to use him to scam with, saying he is a alt of mine? :)
Then again it could just be someone that really wanted that name too.

Back in the day when I was trading in Jita/Sobaseki, a character appeared called Noctornal Avenger. AFAIK - he tried to scam CNR's, implants and the like.
I petitionend and he was not to be seen again :D

I bumped into a Tammy Tentoes in the trade channels. 
She's a pretty good trader tho, by the looks of things, so that's fine. It would annoy me if a trader with such a similar name to mine was full of fail.

There's a "Vicarra" out there as well. I mean, its not as if I'm uber-notable like some, but it is strangely fascinating that someone would want to name their character similarly to me.

I came across a 'Chronus26ts' via search a couple of months ago, I thought it was a little too uncanny so I kept an eye on the charcter, it appeared to have done a few missions then stopped logging on. None of my friends would admit to being behind it, so I was a little worried sombody was up to no good using my name. Strange.

The first few names I tried getting for my main were taken, the first SIX names I wanted for my alt were taken . I'm guessing a lot of those similar names aren't copy cats at all, but just people who had the same idea.

Given the apparent demographics of Eve, I'd say that's the most probable explanation.

Funnily enough, it is against the EULA to name characters specifically to impersonate someone. Then again, he might just really want to be Jim McGregor too. Contact him, and tell him if he wants to keep himself un-petitoned, he has to stick "Not an alt of [link to your showinfo]!" in his bio, and you can do the same
I know there are few other Patch themed characters (including Patch itself, irritatingly), but I've never seen or heard of any of them in space. Its not like its an unusual choice, anyhow. Must mostly be dead chars.

My bio is not long enough for that since ccp chopped off 75% of it.. I used to have this very popular bio with Jack Bauer jokes, now all I have is 6 lines of text remaining. 
But in the name of making the game faster, I can live with that.

Maybe not. There are three other "goumindongs" floating out there. Who all happen to be Intaki noob corps with high standings to a paticular agent.
Check the standings and sec status on your doubles, its likley they are macro haulers.

Well actually those folks are trying to use the name of a character from the Start Trek based show Voyager. There was a half human/klingon named B'elanna Torres. So I doubt they are trying to actually copy you.

I have seen a few people state this but all I can find is :-
"Character and Corporation names may not: be racially or ethnically or sexually derogatory; contain profanity; suggest an affiliation with a real-life hate group or figurehead. They may not impersonate a member of the Eve Online team, S&SI staff, CS staff or volunteer corp. Alternative spellings will be viewed with the same scrutiny as traditional spellings. Names used in the game are also reserved and may not be used in whole or part. Infraction of these rules may result in a mandatory name change or ban at our discretion."
I read this to mean that its fair game to name a char close to another char in the game .
