After looking at new ships models, this one for example,
I'm keep asking myself - what is the purpose of all those little lights all over on this ship?
It's OK if ship is titan or dread: big ship == alot of ppl onboard == many windows.
But on frig? IMO only cabin and navigational lights should be there.
All those lights are just wasting my cap :)
So, except most obvious explanation - they'r look cool,
is there any other (realistic) reason for having new ships looks like chrismass tree or this?

Ship models are taken from the faction ships, the ones withoud pod's some ships, small frigs and some concord ships were specificaly designed with pod only in mind.
Thats how the background story goes about anyway, and besides, why not have cool looking ships? is that not why we like it here?

Yes I'm fine with eye candy, but why all those tiny lights all around?
I'm SF freak and I like when appearance of something is defined by its purpose,
and not just to drop jaws of some younglings.

Look, some of us have twin 8800s with sli (whatever that is). We need big, hard stuff cause our poor graphics cards are getting bored.
As to you request for a realistic reason for lights, well there cannot be any. Go and look at a real life fighting vessel. They turn their lights off when fighting. They are painted in colours that make them blend into the backround.
So, to be realistic our ships should be black, with no lights. And as small as possible.
I prefer big, golden and with lights.

The atron is like 30 meters long.
A 30 meter long boat in RL usually got a few windows here and there :)

The lights on the merlin pictured can't be windows. They're too small. The frigates are big, but that big? 3 decks in the wing alone? Makes no sense.
They're doodads of some kind. And they look cool.
