Cats are strange. I don't know if it's just this cat, or that this cat has been brought up in the hospice so has been surrounded by death from an early age and knows how to spot it. But cats in general know when they're about to die (if it's an illness or old age, obviously not by a car or anything :P) so I suppose it's not that much of a leap in the imagination that a cat knows when others are about to die.
Great story though.

I'm not a biology expert, but maybe our bodies produce emf of some magnitue that a cat can pick up on, and when that emf starts to diminish or has erratic changes in amplitude, it means our organs, brain etc are starting to fail...
I just pulled that out of my ass, but who knows...

If I ever end up in a hospital and that cat walks in my room it better hope it still has it's nine lives to be able to get away from me
