In 4 months I have seen numerous Obelisk's and not a single Charon. Is there any special reason why people train and fly Obelisk, rather than their race freighter? As I compare the Charon and Obelisk - I do not see any justification to train additional week to be able to switch to Gallente ships. Even if you consider the ITeron 5 as additional perk.

Charon is better than Obelisk. Iteron 5 is the best hauler in the game, used by both miners and carriers. Badgers are good for nothing but fighting ;)

Because before freighters were in game everyone who wanted a hauler trained for gallente haulers because the itty5 is so much better than any others. Hence the number of obelisks about. Altho take a trip to jita and u'll see plenty of charons.

Many crimes in the world of EVE is forgivable, just not sure recomending a trip to Jita is one of them.

Agreed. My apologise.

Does the same logic apply to the numbers of the various transport ships? In other words, do the Occator and Viator outnumber the others?
A simple solution, if CCP wants one, might be to put industrials for the other three races into the game that need racial indy 5 to fly. Amarr are particularly weak here; both their ships only need indy 1 IIRC.
While I'm on this subject, why oh why don't CCP switch the Typhoon and Mammoth models around?

On the other hand the fact that they only require 1 is a strength, as any and all amarr combatpilot will have a industrial a their disposal with 15 minues of training.
Generally I believe as poster above mentioned, its due to historic reasons rather than logic. And its a decent tradeoff to me. Slightly better hauler at the cost of a slightly worse freighter.

Ok - while we are on that topic: If Inty 5 is slightly better than Badger II but Charon is slightly better than Obelisk - than which transports are better - Gallente or Caldari?

the bustard is pretty good but only get like 5 lows i think it is. gallente ones get like 7 or something. that's the difference with the haulers. freighters have no slots so caldari are win there.

as already mentioned for high-sec hauling nothing beats the Iteron 5, so it's logical to take the minor extra steps for an Obelisk instead of cross-training Caldari
also, Caldari T2 indys aren't all that hot. Their cargoholds are small compared to Amarr and Gallente - although they can fully expand and still mount a decent (shield) tank - and among Blockade Runners (a ship class that's already underwhelming at this moment) the Crane is the only one which lacks grid to properly fit an MWD ---------- KEEP TRY!!!

Itty 5 is almost twice as good as the Badger 2.
Transports are VERY close. Bustard gets 5500 base and 5 lows, Occy gets 5000 base, and 6 lows.
Charon holds more, but Obe is faster.

These days you have to take suicidegankings into account and thus the freighters witht the most cargospace isn't automaiticly the best. I'd rather fly a Providence with a slaveset than a charon tbh.

So - if you already have trained caldari industrial at lvl3 - would you switch to gallente to have the itty5, occator/vellator and an Obelisk?

Quck question - whats a good freighter for running Level 1 and Level 2 courier missions in low sec space? Or would I need a cruiser with decent cargo space?

If you made enough money to buy a freighter, i dont think you want to spend your time running level 1 and 2 courier missions. Through low-sec.

you can try the gallente cruiser exequeror/a big cargo holded frig depending on size, fit some shield extender istab and wcs on them and you are gtg i think
as a small not mostly small scale cargo ships mentioned as haulers, freighters mention the big ones i mean realy big:)
