with trinity 2.0 and our graphics card finally being used :P With the doubling of the ram (solid slates)
what happens when the grphics update is released and my 7 friends start playing eve and your friends start playing eve.
what happens if eve-online reaches 400,000 people and 70,000 people want on at the same time?
so lace your bets! can eve keep up with?
also would making the universe into 2 servers side by side that you can jump form one or the other by using in-game gates work?
even one other server would free up the space at this future point. but, where would it stop I love love my one universe game :( ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP |

I guess you never informed yourself whats eve running on now.
If eve would run on one single server (or two like you suggest), it sure would lag when the first player logs on.
If anyone talks of the Eve "Server" atm, this already is a cluster built of don't know the exact number, but sure some dozens of single servers atm.

I sure hope the cluster has good scalability if we see the numbers start playing you're talking about :D

I think CCP are prepared to upgrade and add hardware as new players join the game. And will likely be a little pre-emptive with the graphics update and upgrade before anyone new joins.

Yep...EVE is a monster cluster of servers. Each CPU has some number of systems it runs. In the case of Jita I believe they dedicated a CPU to just that system.
If EVE were to grow as you suggest they'd have to get more granular in what a CPU operates. Not a whole system but just some part of it or have multiple CPUs handling a single system. I have no idea of the technical issues to do that but I think they are considerable and it is not easily done.
As for different shards...forget it. CCP is dedicated to the single shard idea. Perhaps at some point if they grew huge they might be forced into such a decision but I think it is one they will avoid if at all possible.

I'm sure that if the numbers increase by that much in so little time, Empire will probably triple in thickness with a hell of a lot more agents. 0.0 would probably spread out even further too.
Hopefully that's what CCP have in mind when the player base grows - just to add more nodes and more systems. ---

With lots of customers CCP will make lots of money. Money = power. I'm sure they will help them solving these problems.

Yes and No. With additional income CCP will be able to hire more programmers and spend additional time working on software/netcode upgrades, but I don't think that EVE's code and harware will be able to scale forever. I predict that at approximately 2000-3000 will be the absolute upper limit to what a single server node can support, regardless of hardware or software. It's a very difficult problem to solve. That being said, it's entirely possible that additional forms of hardware may evolve (quantum computing, i'm looking at you!) that may make this problem much easier to solve, or improved network algorithms. ------------ ULTIMATE LAG SOLUTION | Forum Whiners - Unite! |
