What is the simplest way to do this? I've been told you can't send your alts ISK on a trial account (understandable to combat ISK selling), but whats the easiest way to transfer items?
I transfered some cash by selling a cheap item for a ridiculous cost.
I have a miner, but my alt still has better refining skills. I'd like to send him the ore, and have him send the minerals back.

Just make them both paid accounts, thats really the easier way.

They are both chars on the same account currently (yes, I am aware of the skill training issue). Is there no way for me to hand off items to an alt?

Set up a contract to your alt.

No can do on trial accounts.
Best way to transfer items on a trial account is: 1) Start with the character to whom you wish to give the items. 2) Make a safe spot. 3) Copy the safe spot bookmark 4) Jetison the bookmark in a quite place such as a planet or moon 5) Switch characters to the one that has the item 6) Collect the bookmark from the jetcan 7) Jetison the items that you wish to trade at the safespot 8) Switch back to the receiving character 9) Collect items from the safespot.
You could start with the character that has the items and jetison the items instead of the safe spot bookmark, but that has a higher risk that your stuff will be stollen.

Be careful when doing this. If the same item is offered for a lower price in the same station, the lower priced seller will always get the money regardless of which order you select when making the purchase. This is not a bug. The game was made to work that way.

That approach is going to bite you in the butt. The market isn't designed to work that way. You don't buy individual items. You place buy orders for items, which are always filled by the seller with the lowest price.
Say there are two Target Painters for sale in your station. Once from your alt for 1,000,000, and one from someone else for 2,000. You right-click the 1,000,000 item. The places a buy order at that station for that item for that price. It will be filled by the guy with the 2,000 item for sale, but he'll still get your 1,000,000 ISK.

Another easy way to transfer items (but not isk) is for you both to be in the same player corp and have access to the same hangar. Dump the items in the hanger, log in as your alt, collect and use them then give them back by putting them back in the hangar.

I assume you are not on trial since I never heard of a trial user creating alts, but I guess that happens too.
If so, then pay to get out of trial. Then set up a private Item exchange contract between them. Cost for this is 10000 isk per contract. No risk of loosing your stuff / isk either.

I picked an ammo type that wasnt on sale there. thanks for the warning.
I made the alt to see how much better mining skills i'd start with over a combat based character. I mined with him until i had enough cash to buy a Probe (which the miner couldn't fly due to skills) all the while training up my main chars mining skills. Now my main is almost as good of a miner (but can fly better ships), but its way behind on refining.
I'll prob just convert the trial account to a full one and ditch the alt in the long run.
