I found a lone miner in a lowsec system, but as soon as I targetted him, he warp off. He didn't head for a gate/station/planet etc so I assume he was aligned for warp already to a SS.
I found him on the scanner, but there is no way to warp to him.
I've never used probes, but are they what I need to be able to warp to his SS?
If I do need to fit probes, then doesnt this weaken my ships offenses and make it a bad idea to fit if I am solo'ing?

why again are you hunting a miner?? You need to start hunting something worthwhile and that can fight back before you call it PvP ôHe is one of those people who would be enormously improved by death.ö |

To be fair he didn't mention PvP. I think he's pirating.

Again?????? WTFAYO. I wasn't hunting him. He is just what I came across. I've basically being attacking anything I find (and paying the price for it) to practice. This was the situation I came across and I was just asking for information.

unless u only intend on killing miners and such then u will need an alt or a friend in a covert ops to probe them out.

Check out the guide to scan probing in the ships and modules section. Tells you all you need but the basics:
Get recon probe launcher plus handful of snoops and fathoms.
Once you have the target in range of whatever probe you're using (snoop is the best I understand) you launch a probe, select search for a ship, hit analyse and twiddle your thumbs.
Once the results are in you'll be given a list of ships found with the approx deviation of your warp in. If this is 0km then you can warp right in on your prey.
So, go ahead and do this and start yarring.
Downside is you're losing a high slot to the launcher plus its fitting requirements but nothing beats warping in on someone who thinks he/she is safe and giving them a heartattack

Yep, you pretty much need probes and bunch of skills with them.
Although even that won't guarantee success : most people know to be somewhat wary of probes.
Typical pirate gangs have dedicated prober ship for quickly locating and scrambling such targets, but sure singles ships can use them at well (pay special attention to hefty CPU requirements probe launchers have).

Remember a miner that SS if he has any brain at all, he will be scanning for probes aswell.
So if you launch a probe he will notice it.

Thanks for the info. I'll check that out although I dont think it's gonna be my cuppa tea if it means gimping the ship.

You dont need an alt in a covops, you dont need lots of skills. My alt trained astrometrics to lv III and then I started using him. He is very accurate. He is flying the minmatar probe ship wich gets bonus to probing time. I think all factions have a prober frig.
However you dont really need a prober frig either. I was probed down myself once by a vagabond, suprised me at the time, but any ship with enough CPU and a spare highslot left can afford to fit a recon probe launcher. PvP means Player versus Player. So assuming that he's a player, and the miner is a player and he is trying to kill that player then it's Player versus Player, or PvP.
Get it now?
And to the OP, you'll need to learning about scan probing. A guide can be found here.
Sincerely, K'reemy ---

If you don't have probes handy, try BM'ing. Its a real pain but thats how we used to do it before we had probes. You have to use the system map browser, get him scanned to 5deg. And then start working your way to him. And At some point you will most likely fly over him and he will briefly show up on your overhead. Then you have em.

Someone please show Voodoo to the forum rules. I just can't be asked to try to help such a prime example of infantile forum behavior. If you don't have something to help the OP with, DON'T POST FOR THE LOVE OF EVE!!!! No one, REALLY, no one, wants to read your trolling worthless posts.
That being said, to the OP, check out that post in the ships and mods section. After having done so, get the skills to fit up a probe laucher. Drop that shiny new gear on a ship and grab some probes. Head to some well populated high sec system full of mission runners. Use your SHIP scanner to get the direction of who you want to find. Warp to the closest thing you can find to them. Hopefully getting you withing probe range. NOW, launch your probe and make a sandwich. Examine your results, hopefully warp to ship.
Rinse and repeat until you are the probing ninja master. Once you have your probing blackbelt, combine your new expertise with your yyaaarrrrr.
Good Luck M8.

/signed, don't flame him, his name is cute!
I liked the bookmark-idea, did that already. The main problem is that if you get a bookmark in his grid you are most likely still some hundret kilometres away from him. It works for AFKlers and ppl who are stupid, that's all. On the other hand, it's the same for probes.
Fitting a recon probe launcher on a frig is a.) nearly impossible and b.) I think the scantime is about 6 mins with basic skills and no bonus from ship, while the probe just runs 5 mins... wooosch :-)
if you don't want to invest extra money into alts, etc, using a covert for some days is fun. just probe arround, see what you get, bookmark hostile spots, see how they react on you and how they calm down after some days not seeing you on scanner. Then strike them hard. Hf :) ---- Start of Sig ----
