Do you have to be a 133t PwnZ0r to succeed at this game? Is it possible for a newb to pwn in this game?

Considering how most PvP occurs in groups, yeah a newb can do reasonably well. Even leet players will often go roaming with their buddies in cruisers, and a newbie in a cruiser will still be able to lend a hand. Not as well as the dudes with the leet skills and leet equipment (which one would hope, otherwise the skills and equipment would be worthless), but the newbie will definitely be able to make a contribution.
Heck, even in a frigate you can strap yourself in and hold targets down for the damage dealers. No competent pilot is worthless.

Ask the original members of Rifterdeath...
4 noobs in cheap frigates went out, killed a cruiser and an interdictor, and came back with a few mil of loot.
I had 2 days under my belt, and 2 others were still in their 14 day free trial.
It's not always about who has the most skill points, it's more about who has the most skill. Two very very different things that a lot of people can't differentiate. Someone with some intelligence who knows what they are doing, even right out of the box, can take out someone who has been playing for a year or more. It's all about application.

This is the first MMO that I have seen, and perhaps the first MMO ever, that does not divide the populations fighting abilities based on the level number one is at. A day old player can have just as much affect, and be just as vital, as a player in a carrier. The trick is having a mind that can think on the battlefeild in command and understanding that you are part of a whole, and should not try to grab personal glory for yourself if you wish to win the encounter.
For example, you may be just starting out, but if you are in a fast ship, and can tackle another player (slow them down, prevent them from warping) the vet player whos in the battleship can lock onto the player your tackling and destroy him, something he wouldnt typically be able to do if that player was running free. Remember, this game encourages team work above all else.

The BEST thing a newbie can have is a bit of dedication. Read up the forums, play with EFT\Quickfit\evemon, join a good corp and help out.
Learn quickly and even relativly slow sp chars can helpout in PvP. 1x Celestis with 3x Sensor Damps can take a 3 year old character in a 2 billion isk carrier out of a fight. -----

The key here is attitude, patience, and brainpower.
The best PvPers are the ones that are motivated from a young in-game age to sharpen their skills and knowledge as well as they can, are open to new tactics and ideas, and are willing to work with others to achieve their combat goals.
Its very difficult to run around being a solo "133t PwnZ0r" in this game, that attitude will get you killed and make you look like a 12 year old jackass in the process - that reputation will follow you during your entire ingame career. The more intelligent and dedicated a fighter you are, the better you'll be, especially if you spend a lot of time training and practicing your art.

In this game it pays to be part of team to succeed.
A very good pilot in a large ship can be taken down by a group of newbs with a good squad leader and a damage dealer.
If your into PVP then train your pvp skills up, if not stay in high sec and be a mission runner, miner, explorer, contractor, hauler, ther so much you can do if you don't fancy taking a chance on losing. -----------------------------------------------

Being a veteran of several wars and fleets with the Eve-University, I can tell you that a pack of raving noobs with foam seething from the corners of their mouths can indeed deal out swift retributin with a satifsying killmail to anyone who dares to cross them.
Becoming an elite 1 man killing machine, that takes time, and skill and patience, as does the whole of the game.
But so long as your reading age is higher than the number of fingers you have on the standard left hand you'll do fine.
Be patient is my recommendation though, above all else nothing happens over night in Eve.
