I agree that more Fighter control options are needed...maybe even including Autoresponse Modes:
Passive: Does not attack without direct orders.
Passive Defender: Attacks when the controlling ship is attacked.
Active Defender: Attacks when any ship in gang is attacked.
Active: Attacks anything locking the Controlling ship that is not ganged.

The fighter interceptors are a very good idea in my opinion, the bombers should not use missiles because even missiles with large explosion radii can still hit small targets if painted enough.
The bombers should be for of a capital weapon for POS sieges, high damage with the tracking a M777 howitzer field artillery piece. ---------------------------------

like the idea on varying the types of fighters but it would require alot more things to be worked out about them before they were to be implemented

Well, Target Painting shouldnt be entirely useless, but CBombers will be relatively defenseless unless you task CFighters or CInterceptors to protect them.
And the CBs will be slooow. Think 1 km/s full mwd speed.
CB: 1,000 m/s CF: 2,500 m/s CI: 4,000 m/s
Perhaps the skill trees should look like this:
CF - Same as now:
Carrier Fighters I - 20% Damage -Drone Interfacing V --Drones V -Leadership V
CB:
Carrier Bombers I - 10% Missile Flight Time and Orbit Range -Heavy Drone Operation V --Drones V -Leadership V
CI:
Carrier Interceptors I - 4% Less mass -Scout Drone Operation V --Drones I -Drone Navigation V --Drones IV -Combat Drone Operation V --Drones III -Drones V
Its a good discussion at the very least.

Going back to the Carrier Grid, I do not really see it as a bad thing even when lag is taken into account. However, I'm also not entirely sure I can see enough situations where such a thing would be needed. My thoughts would be tactical warp ins where you can deploy CBs, CIs, and CFs from outside of a traditional engagement range (ie greater than 250 km).
Possible imbalances mostly regarding POSes would exist, perhaps let POSes anchor and Outposts upgradeable with player controllable Flight Deck Arrays that can house and deploy a similar amount of CIs, CFs, and CBs as Motherships. Also make them the only POS weapon that can engage beyond the 250 km Grid Radius. Also limit the POS to one of them, Outpost perhaps can use a larger one, or more than one.

<slightly> off topic, but the talk of the weaknesses of the current fighters has me wondering: Drone skills, most of them anyway, do not impact fighters. What about drone rigs? Does a fighter benefit from the drone durability link?

Afaik Rigs do not affect Drones. But of this I am not sure.

Bombers having the potential to add carrier dps to pos sieges? Woot, dreads are now obsolete!
I support the idea of more types of fighter, and like the idea of more of a "bomber" type of fighter drone for anti large ship(maybe more along the lines of HAM armed, about 15km range or so?), and more of a "fighter/interceptor" type for anti medium/small ship, but massively inflated dps numbers and fighters that have the potential to target and hit pos are probably a bad idea.
New, more sexy models too, plzthx.

why not just have the bombers be 1 launcher torpedo drones, each one has a cargo bay and 1 torp launcher integrated into the drone. Then have the torps do standard damage. (without skills so we can nerf caldari) ------------- Hadean Drive Yards

I kinda like the idea of the carrier being able to deploy a bomber type of thing that is slow, big and hits like a truck. To maybe balance it make it a one shot deal. Have the bombers carry a special type of close range citadel torp or a cluster of 4-5 regular (again close range) torps.
This would require the bomber to "slowboat" it out to the target drop the payload than get back to the carrier dock up get manually reloaded by the carrier pilot (who would have to carry the ammo) and then redeploys to deliver another load.
The interceptor thing sounds good 2 ... giving carriers some drone versatility is a good thing imo

CBomber Rapid Citadel Deployment
Carries 5 Citadel Torpedos Internally and can launch all 5 in the space of 10 seconds, 2 seconds apart. Each Bomber must fire its entire payload, and must return to the Carrier to reload, no actual ammo is used, tho perhaps using some mining drone code it would work.
