lol at people stealing copper. That's actually not that uncommon. People will go into newly constructed houses and building and steal all the copper pipes.
I'd just stick to melting down my pennies though. (the copper in them is worth more than the face value)

I know of people who break into electrical sub stations to steal copper, I also no of a few cases where some of the people have been killed while attempting to do so.

Theres alot of it going round at the moment, and not just copper. It seems like metal prices in general are rising, so much so that people are now hi-jacking lorries for it.

I take it your not melting Pennies from the USA? Since the mid 70's they have been aluminum coated in copper. Since as you say the copper was worth more than a penny. Also unless you are licensed to melt the pennies you can get into trouble for destroying Government property.
