I was out hunting in low sec as I tend to do when I spotted a mining op!
2 scythes, 2 haulers and a rifter sitting in belt. I havent seen a mining op in low sec for almost a year! Just the idea of crashing into their mining op doing some destruction starts to pump my blood even if they are noobs.
I thought they must have some sort of tactic to remain out here, damn alt out of probes so he warped in just to look where they were at and out again. Next is my main jumping in, scythes are gone but I manage to kill a hauler, and the rifter.
Local is silent... No smack..
Then I see 4 rifters on my scanner at the nearby station. They intend on attacking me? I stay in the belt to see what happens next.Tthey warp to the belt and attack me! Fight was intense but unfortunatley my setup favours 1v1 encounters and not 4 frigs attacking me. They dps my drones at first witch was good but then switched to me when they noticed it wasnt good enough. I manage to get one rifter down before they killed me.
Alot of fun. Had a nice chat with em afterwards. Nice to see that ppl try and make isk in low sec, and actually mount a counter attack even though they are all just a few weeks old.
GF I say Dastardly Bastards and welcome to EvE.

Late last night, a small frigate/cruiser gang of ours hit a small mining op in low sec as well. Dominix and Retriever mining in a belt. Unfortunately, the domi was stabbed - but a shadow serp appeared as he warped out, so we thought it'd be a safe bet he would return... and so he did.
Carnage ensued. Kudos to those miners though. For taking their chances and to their frigate/destroyer/ceptor escort who sacrificed their ships trying to save their mate. They even brought in two myrmidons with very short notice, but wisely decided to disengage as their comms seemed somewhat disorganized. Was nice to see a industrialist corp with some stones - and I wish them the best of luck in the future.

Wow nice of you to post it here! I have to say in corpchat we were all like going crazy! wow a player that dropped in on us, usually we lose some ships to gatecamps! So we rushed back to HQ, fitted some rifters with all that we could find and jumped back in, kinda chaotic with 1 at a time warping back! :D but we tried to organize it.
Then we meet General Coochie, he stayed in the belt but he could easily have run out so we could never catch him! Kudo's to that coochie!
So Mr Bodacious, Ard Unjigo, Silvetrys & myself rushed towards him, tried to get close fast with a MWD webbed and scrambled and we gave it all we got. He didnt go down easy, and we lost one of our buddies in the fight :-( R.I.P!
I really was excited afterwards, it was our first corpkill :) General Coochie, Thanks for the nice fight, and sorry we came at you with 4 people! hopefully soon when we are a bit older in the game and more experienced we meet again!
Really nice to see this message on the forums btw!
Regards,
Jeffrey (Midgard Onslaught)

Wait... you haven't seen a mining op in low sec for almost a year?
So... what do you normally hunt? Why is low sec mining so worthless that nobody does it? Or if they do it, why is it that an entire year goes by before you can catch someone at it?
I'm very interested in pirating and/or low sec mining myself but I feel like there's mixed signals on what people do in this game. I sometimes get the impression that low sec space is nothing but pirates attacking each other, because no mining parties ever go there who aren't noobs.

Simple economics really. Lowsec ore at the best of times isn't even worth twice what highsec ore would be, so what's the point of putting 1 miner and 1 fighter in lowsec when you could have both of them mining in highsec instead, at greatly reduced(if any at all) risk to either of them? Many industrial corps have very few pilots solely dedicated to combat so in terms of risk/reward lowsec just isn't worth the bother.
Nevertheless, kudos both to the OP and the guys that fought him. The EVE universe would be a lot more interesting if there were indeed a middle way between being 99% safe in highsec or living as a pet in 0.0. People going out there and making it happen anyway can 't be a bad thing. Props for that.

I can't believe you found targets in a BELT!! I'm so jealous, I miss that feeling Cool story, massive credit to the rifter pilots for the attack too, a massive rarity in this game these days. ______________________ Sybrite - it's like Turby, but better. All of your ex-members are belong to us!

Man, this thread makes me realize how empty lowsec really is.
I never find this stuff anymore :(
Recently I've resorted to ramming destroyers into mining ops in HIGHSEC. Just for kicks.. and the nice strip miners.
Even still, it hurts me when nobody puts the effort out to really mine in lowsec. It feels that EVE is becoming bloated with "filler"... which accounts for more than 75% of the pilots I find in the Placid region. Macro haulers/missioners galore. Every time I jump into a system I have to show info on EVERY TARGET. Even if I scan, all I ever find are either haulers or pirates. Blah.

So what's the point of low sec space in this game?
I'm suddenly regretting my subscription.
We were mining in highsec last night just to get a feel for it. We figured we would naturally move to lowsec because that's where the money would obviously be.
Instead I'm hearing that lowsec = higher risk + lower rewards. I came to Eve because PvP is dead in WOW, but it sounds like it's dead here, too!

Lowsec is higher risk/lower reward due to the pirate contingent.
0.0 is high risk/high reward(depending on what u do of couse), u kinda skip lowsec and go straight to no-sec.

Sorry, no dice Jirai. This is a huge finger-pointing over-simplification and is based on some pretty subjective ideas as well about what constitutes a "reward" in EVE.
The beauty of EVE, imo, is that it's a well-designed game that allows for folks with a variety of different ideas about what constitutes a "reward" to set goals for themselves and achieve those "rewards" for themselves within a very broad game and community of players. Fairly often when "reward" (as in low-risk/high-reward) is spoken of by "knowledgeable authorities" on these forums it is almost exclusively done in the context of ISK. Isk is the default EVE game "reward" they seem to sagaciously imply. Meaning no disrespect, that is complete bull sh!t and, imo, it does a disservice to new players.
EVE allows for the enjoyment of a wide-variety of "rewards" or "winning". Many folks do play with one of their main personal "rewards" being the efficient accumulation of a large amount of isk. Others play with their main "reward" being social interaction and team work with others. Or the "reward" of RPing a space-based game. Or the "reward" of being a competent and successful pilot. Or the "reward" of being behind the steering wheel of a capital ship. On and on it goes.
I've read some players enjoyment mainly comes from mining. This is their "reward". It's not one for me. I find mining monotonous and dull unless I'm doing it with a group in low-sec. Then it's a "reward" because there is a rush from the possibility that you will be attacked (like General Coochie did us) and have the opportunity to defend yourself. Other's don't consider mining a "reward" because it is not as profitable isk-wise as other activities they can do. It's all subjective and when folks post statements that imply it's not they demonstrate a poor grasp of what makes this game so diverse and engaging for so many different types of people.
I find that living low-sec is low-risk/high-reward as do all my corp-mates.
The risk in any game for me is that I will become bored or the game will feel too predictable and living in low-sec means that I face a low-risk of boredom or predictability. For me the "rewards" are high because I want to learn the game quickly and the low-sec environment pushes your need to learn quickly, be in situations that demand working well as a team with others, a much more balanced PvP system than most MMOs and a large amount of freedom to do whatever I want (ie: attack other players ).
The reason that low-sec is less populated then high-sec is NOT because of pirates. It is because a large number of players equate building fat wallets with "reward" or losing few ships as a "reward" or using implants for faster skill training as their "reward". That's fine. Those play styles are completely valid. Low-sec is for a different play-style. It's less populated because apparently there are fewer of us that find what it offers "rewarding".
To Zimjin. If you want to get the most out of EVE, define for yourself what constitutes a "reward" in this game and then pursue it. Don't wait for it to come to you and don't let forum "authorities" define it for you. EVE does not work that way. If better PvP is your "reward" then stow those damn mining lasers in your hangar and get on down here. The PvP in low-sec EVE is damn good imo. But you have to find it and make it happen. Best of luck to you.

PvP definately isn't dead in Eve.
Low sec can be very rewarding, just do some research, and find somewhere a few jumps out of the way of main trade routes. Pirates generally stay to populated areas in low sec. Myself, when I was just getting into PvP, high populated areas meant pirates hunting pirates, low pop areas meant for more pirate vs miner/ratter friendly encounters.
Join up with me sometime and I'll show you.
